We have been far too slow to speak openly about this. Parental accountability has become almost taboo, an inconvenient truth in the education debate. In many schools, parents are the only group shielded from meaningful scrutiny or responsibility, often receiving a free pass while teachers and schools shoulder the blame.
It is no surprise, then, that we’ve seen a surge in diagnostic labels, sometimes used as a means to deflect responsibility. For some, it has become easier to attribute challenging behaviour to disorders than to confront the impact of lifestyle choices or permissive parenting. Terms like Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), and Conduct Disorder (CD) are now common in school settings. And when a child can’t arrive on time, we might even hear of Time Perception Disorder (TPD).
This is not to deny the existence of genuine conditions, nor to stigmatise those who need support. But we must be honest: overdiagnosis and misattribution can serve as a convenient shield from necessary conversations about boundaries, discipline, and the role of parents in shaping behaviour. Schools cannot, and should not, be expected to compensate for the absence of structure and accountability at home.

From my experience of teaching in a community where the traditional adult authority is still widely in place at home, I find the problem is that denying children access to gadgets, games, fast food etc etc is often perceived as deprivation. Consumerism is mistaken for provision

No teacher or student should be compelled to share a learning environment with individuals who are violent or persistently disruptive. We find ourselves in an increasingly untenable position where the needs of a single disruptive individual are allowed to outweigh those of the wider school community. The majority, students and staff alike, are made to feel a misplaced moral obligation to accommodate behaviour that directly impairs the education, wellbeing, and safety of others.
This distorted narrative has flourished in part because schools are expected to shoulder the burdens of broader societal failings, often without corresponding support or accountability from families. There has been a gradual erosion of parental responsibility, with the expectation that schools alone must manage the consequences.
To restore balance, we must reinforce the authority of schools and headteachers, empowering them to act decisively in the interests of the majority of pupils who are committed to learning.
This includes reining in the disproportionate influence of activist groups and legal advocates who undermine school culture, discipline, and the fundamental mission of education.
No teacher should face abuse or violence in the classroom, yet Labour’s discredited Schools Bill does nothing to tackle this. Instead, they voted against our proposal to ensure all violence against teachers were reported to the police.

I recently sat down with a group of Palestinian Christians from Bethlehem, Jerusalem, and Nazareth. They shared their struggles and asked me questions I couldn’t answer. Maybe our Christian friends in America can. Their voices deserve to be heard. A thread:

Good senior leaders enforce the rules they expect you to enforce. They teach the way they expect you to teach. They don’t mind you observing their lessons. They don’t ignore trouble in the corridors, hide in their offices or ignore students who aren’t obeying rules concerning uniform or behaviour around school.

Imagine a two year old Israeli girl had just been shot dead by Hamas militants.
It would lead every bulletin, be splashed on every front page.
It would be presented as cast iron evidence of unforgivable, depraved evil.
Not here, though. Palestinian life simply does not matter.

I've not seen a single media outlet in the UK, Europe, or US report on the killing of this little girl by the Israeli military.
Not a single political leader has spoken of this incident. No emotive interviews have been done with her family. No condemnations have been issued.
Last night, Israeli forces fatally shot Laila Mohammad Ayman Khatib, 2, while she ate dinner with her family in their home near Jenin. Soldiers shot four bullets through the living room window, one of which struck Laila in the back of the head.

Demonstrating the power of education. Decades of education. Which I’m sad to say, I was part of as a teacher there, stupidly thinking I could change things from inside.
These people have been carefully taught dehumanisation and Jewish exceptionalism. It starts in preschool.

It’s unbelievable that Israeli media continues to be more up front about Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Palestinians than American media.

Children aren’t being excluded because they don’t like An Inspector Calls. They’re excluded because they threaten their teachers, make other children’s lives a hell of bullying, or they constantly ruin the learning of others. Also, the curriculum hasn’t changed substantially in a decade so why attribute exclusions to this?

I will never forget how a fabricated story of beheaded Israeli babies moved journalists like @abbydphillip and @sarasidnerCNN to tears while real Palestinian babies dying of cold, starvation, under the rubble, burned alive, is met with silence and callous indifference.

Stories like the Israeli commander breaking the bones of a 4 year old Palestinian child with bare hands, are a confirmation that not only the Israeli army is ROTTEN to the core, but so are all governments that allow these sickening crimes to be normalized.
