The betrayal of trust between Charles Spencer and his former best friend, Darius Guppy, remains one of the most explosive scandals in modern aristocratic circles. The Lifelong Friendship: Charles Spencer and Darius Guppy met as teenagers and later attended Oxford University together, where they were both members of the notorious Bullingdon Club. Their bond was close: Guppy served as the best man at Spencer’s 1989 wedding to Victoria Lockwood, and Spencer returned the favour at Guppy’s 1991 wedding to Patricia Holder. However, in February 1993, Guppy’s life collapsed when he was jailed for five years for insurance fraud. With Guppy behind bars and his wife, Patricia, pregnant with their first child, Spencer stepped in with an offer of help. He provided Patricia with a cottage on his ancestral Althorp estate (the same cottage that he denied Princess Diana to take shelter in) in Northamptonshire. While the gesture appeared noble on the surface, Patricia later exposed that it came with a dark underside. Earl Spencer used her vulnerability and isolation to repeatedly subject her to sexual harassment and tried to seduce her. He is sick in the head as no women is safe from his womanising, not even pregnant women! She claimed that Spencer made persistent, aggressive attempts to seduce her while her husband was in prison. Patricia kept the torment to herself for years to protect her family and believing what Charles had said to her that 'no one would believe her' but the truth eventually surfaced in 2006. Upon learning what his former best friend had done to his wife, an enraged Guppy flew from South Africa to confront Charles. The confrontation turned violent: Guppy brutally beat Charles, leaving the Earl with a broken cheekbone, a black eye, a bloody nose, and a concussion. At the time, Charles tried to cover up the incident by claiming his facial injuries were from a "cricket injury," but Guppy exposed the truth by writing an open letter detailing the assault and Spencer's alleged misconduct, which he distributed to journalists.
