My latest for @TheHubCanada Alberta is testing the boundary from owning resources to developing them. This has manifested in its various royalty-in-kind programs; equity stakes in pipelines and refineries; and even the floating of a Crown corporation to build and own natural gas pipelines, albeit later dismissed. I don’t think Alberta has yet crossed a line. But what is a conservative government if not one that participates in the market reluctantly, and with regret, and with a clear exit strategy? What we are seeing instead is a government that seems to be seeking opportunities to become a market participant, keeping its options open and numerous, and making deals that could otherwise be left to firms. There is a place for market interventionism in some extenuating circumstances. I won’t suggest otherwise. But the political culture in Alberta is such that it should be practiced as a last resort, not a first resort. thehub.ca/2026/10/19/is-albe…

There's a missing ingredient in Alberta's grand ambition to ramp up oilsands production & support what looks like a pipeline-building revival... And no, I'm not talking about capital or even regulatory changes. DILUENT! Why is no one talking about this? thehub.ca/2026/10/14/a-missi…

This is the closest @GK_Fellows & team will ever get to quantum physics in modelling Alberta separation multiverses. SPP deserves massive kudos, but feelings & human irrationality are key factors that often get in the way. Seppie wishful thinking beware. thehub.ca/2026/09/17/alberta…

Fresh off the podcast studio! @awlegge Adam Legge explains what's in the gov-commissioned report on the potential cost of AB separation, how he thinks about the "smooth" vs "difficult" scenarios, etc. Listen here or on wherever you find your podcasts: thehub.ca/podcast/audio/are-…

Huge 👏
We just announced Canada’s new Productivity Mega Deduction. This cuts Canada’s marginal effective tax rate from 13% to 6.4% on new business investment — the lowest of any major economy in the world. Canada is building big — and becoming the best place in the world to build. More here: pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releas…

Danielle Smith may have downplayed the Crown nat gas pipelines idea, but she didn't downplay the NGTL bottleneck problem. She even called TC Energy' a "monopoly." Here's MUCH MORE & how this issue could become another AB vs Ottawa spat! thehub.ca/2026/09/14/daniell…

I’ve now obtained the 46-page leaked Alberta government document behind @thenarwhalca story. A looming natural gas pipeline crunch, years of frustration with TC Energy, internal government dissent, and proposals for 2 Crown entities. thehub.ca/2026/09/11/inside-…

Re: The Narwhal’s breaking story: I recently asked Alberta Technology Minister whether solving the AI electricity bottleneck risks creating a natural gas bottleneck instead. I’d heard NGTL capacity can take years to secure. He didn’t dispute it. thehub.ca/2026/09/11/alberta…

What to expect in next week's pageantry of summitry. What does $1 trillion in investment actual entail, and how might the collapsed US trade talk complicate things? My latest analysis here:
