Think about this. Instead of the government of Canada giving $30 billion to Ukraine they could have built a brand new state of the art refinery that processes 1 million barrels of heavy oil. Your cost of fuel would be cut in half. But hey, laundering money is cool too I guess.

Have you ever noticed we live in a country where a 95-year-old man can walk into a mud pit in Chicago, call his band The Fuckers, and start reciting “Enter Sandman” like he’s giving a TED Talk from the afterlife? William Shatner. Ninety-five. Riot Fest. Douglass Park. Thirty-five minutes. Spoken-word heavy metal. In the mud. With people cheering like this is normal. It is not normal. It is magnificent. He did “Crazy Train.” He did “Ace of Spades.” He did Metallica. Not sang them. Talked them. Like Captain Kirk got trapped in a guitar amp and decided to negotiate with Satan instead of the Klingons. Behind him: actual musicians. Marcus Nand. Phil Soussan. Grown men who have paid rent with real notes while a nonagenarian stands there going, “What the F is heavy metal?” and somehow makes it a question worth answering. Brian May is on the record. Tony Iommi is on the record. The album is called *What the F Is Heavy Metal?* which is the most honest title in music since someone first admitted most of it is just louder complaining. The crowd ate it up. Of course they did. We will watch a man old enough to remember radio as furniture stand in wet dirt and dare death to tap him on the shoulder. Death probably took one look, said “I’m not dealing with this today,” and went to find someone easier. You’re never too old to live out your dreams. That’s the line they always use. The real line is: most people quit the second it gets embarrassing. Shatner waited until embarrassing became the whole act, then sold tickets. Follow @wickedsmaahht before the rest of the timeline figures it out. #WilliamShatner #RiotFest #WhatTheFIsHeavyMetal #NeverTooOld #SpokenWordMetal #LiveLongAndGetLouder #CaptainKirkHasEnteredTheChat

5 years ago today I went into orbit and life has never been the same! I’m so grateful I was chosen to be part of Inspiration4, the world’s first all-civilian orbital mission. And I’m most proud of the fact that our mission raised $250 million for childhood cancer research and treatment, a cause personal to me as I am a childhood cancer survivor. Will forever use my platform to spread my message of hope, that what you’ve been through doesn’t have to limit where you go

There is a letter from the federal housing minister to Mayor Farkas that I think more Calgarians should read, and I have highlighted the part that matters. Ottawa approved our third Housing Accelerator payment and then attached conditions to the final one, which is worth roughly $65 million, and to collect it council has to allow four units on a significant majority of lots across the city before October 27. Council already spent eight days in public hearings this spring and voted twelve to three the other way, with the repeal taking effect on August 4. I build homes for a living, so I am not arguing against density or against building more, but the shape of this deal bothers me, because money that came out of Calgarians' pockets is being offered back on the condition that Calgary reverses a decision Calgarians turned up to make. Would you take the money?

For once, Dolly Parton was the one sitting in the audience while somebody else told her story. That is the part of Shania Twain’s 2006 performance of “Coat of Many Colors” at the Kennedy Center Honors that stays with me. Dolly had spent decades telling stories onstage. She knew exactly where a lyric needed a smile, where a joke belonged, where a song needed to slow down. She was usually the person holding the microphone and deciding what the audience should see. This time, she was watching. And Shania was singing about the little girl Dolly used to be. That changes the feeling of the song before Shania even reaches the important lines. “Coat of Many Colors” comes from a very specific memory: Dolly’s mother making her a coat from pieces of cloth because buying a new one simply wasn't an option. As a child, Dolly wore it proudly. Other children saw something poor. She saw something her mother had made for her. It is a story Dolly has told many times. But hearing somebody else tell it while she sits there is different. You start watching Dolly instead of Shania. That is what I find fascinating about the performance. Shania doesn't try to imitate Dolly. She doesn't put on the famous voice or mannerisms. She sings the song in her own voice, which somehow makes the tribute feel more respectful. She isn't pretending to be Dolly. She is reminding Dolly that her story reached someone else. And by 2006, that story had traveled a remarkable distance. The little coat that once marked a child as different had become part of a song known around the world. The girl who might have been embarrassed by what she wore became one of the most recognizable women in country music. And now another country star was standing in one of the most formal rooms in American culture, singing about that coat while its owner listened. There is a lovely awkwardness to that. For once, Dolly cannot control the story by telling it herself. She has to receive it. Maybe that is what makes the moment more moving than a simple tribute. Shania isn't presenting Dolly with another award. She is presenting her with something much older: her own memory, seen through somebody else's eyes. And perhaps that is one of the nicest things another person can do with a story you have carried for years. Not improve it. Not explain it. Just remember it carefully enough to give it back to you. Dolly wrote the song. Shania sang it. But for those few minutes, the story belonged to both of them.

Nooooooo I can’t belive it, Dolly Parton gone. She was such a powerhouse, she was amazing. From her dirt floor and many coloured coat to worldwide superstar. Her charity work, her marriage, Dollywood, her literacy program, her musical talent … what wasn’t she successful at? And to top it all off, she was funny and humble. The world will miss her energy. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
