Poor, poor Brian.
In the early days of Coinbase, they were desperate to be accepted by the system, implemented KYC without a legal pretext and totally swallowed the Kool-Aid that bitcoin was money and Coinbase was a "FinTech".
Had he known a little Internet history, he might have chosen a different tactic.
Skype was attacked in the same way that Coinbase and other bitcoin companies are being attacked.
Skype managed to see off the attackers by classifying themselves as something other than a "Telephone Service", so that all the telecoms laws didn't apply to it.
As soon as they did this proper classification of the Skype service, they were free from telecoms regulation (and in some cases where telephony was a state monopoly not free from regulation but free from being stopped altogether). This what I have been arguing for from the earliest days of Coinbase.
Bitcoin is literally not money, in the same way that Skype was not a telephone service, and WhatsApp is not a telephone service or telephony company. All the telephony companies you care to mention are still operating, even state monopolies, and WhatsApp is there for anyone who wants it. Which is over 3 billion people.
The fundamental error Brian made is now going to haunt him forever. He is going to fight regulation that he asked for himself, rather than acting like a real American, like Travis Kalanick.
Uber is not a taxi company
AirBnb is not a hotel company
Skype is not a telephony company
Bitcoin companies are not banks or fintechs
Email companies are not Postal Services
This was obvious to me in 2012, but not obvious for Goldman Sachs refugees who look at the world through the wrong end of the telescope.
But it seems the idea is starting to spread. FINALLY!

🇺🇸 ELON JUST CALLED THE EU'S BLUFF - OPEN SOURCING X'S ALGORITHM IN 6 DAYS
@ElonMusk is making X's entire recommendation algorithm public January 17th. Every line of code showing what posts you see and why.
Then updating it every 4 weeks with developer notes.
This is a direct response to France classifying X as an "organized gang," the same legal designation they use for drug cartels and mafia, so they could wiretap employee phones and demand algorithm access.
The EU wants control over what people see online. They fined X $140 million last month, launched probes into "algorithm abuse," and demanded researchers get data access. France wants "experts" to analyze X's code to "uncover the truth" about the platform.
Elon's response: "You want the algorithm? Here's the algorithm. Everyone gets it."
This is 4D chess. EU regulators wanted private access to modify and control.
Instead they're getting public disclosure they can't manipulate. Every competing platform, every researcher, every government on Earth gets the same code at the same time.
You can't secretly pressure someone to censor when the censorship mechanism is open source.
My prediction: EU loses its mind, threatens more fines.
Elon doesn't care. Other platforms forced to follow or look like they're hiding something.
If that's not a classic Elon, what is?

The common belief that the decline in infectious disease deaths is due to modern medicine, like antibiotics and vaccines, is incorrect. The vast majority of the decline, particularly in the early 19th and 20th centuries, preceded these medical ideas.
Three key developments drove the earlier progress:
1. The rise of robust public health infrastructure, including engineered sanitation and sewer systems, protected municipal water supplies with filtration and chlorination, systematic garbage collection, early measures to control water and industrial air pollution, food safety regulations (e.g., meat inspection), and vector control (e.g., mosquito reduction).
2. Profound improvements in personal and socioeconomic well-being, such as vastly improved nutrition and increased dietary diversity, rising wages, less crowded housing with better ventilation (which increased exposure to sunlight and thus vitamin D production), the enactment of protective child and adult labor laws, public education, and greater public personal hygiene.
3. The abandonment of harmful medical practices, including treatments with mercury, arsenic, and strychnine, bloodletting and purging, and the “hot regimen,” cleared the way for more supportive care.
Data strongly support the pivotal role of public health infrastructure. Research indicates that nearly 90% of the decline in infectious disease mortality among American children occurred between 1900 and 1940, a period before the widespread availability of antibiotics and most vaccines. A parallel, even steeper decline—over 98%—was observed in England and Wales, underscoring that this was a widespread phenomenon driven by societal factors rather than specific medical interventions (and in fact far fewer medical interventions).
“...nearly 90% of the decline in infectious disease mortality among US children occurred [from 1900] before 1940, when few antibiotics or vaccines were available.”

Every day that passes without a pardon for the Samourai Wallet developers is another day that @realDonaldTrump's administration validates a perverse legal theory that an entity can be an unlicensed money transmitting business under US 18 1960(b)(1)(C) while simultaneously NOT being an unlicensed money transmitting business under US 1960(b)(1)(B). Clearly, the law has been twisted out of context solely for the purpose of putting non-cuatodial wallet developers in prison.

Today is Bill's last day before he surrenders to the Bureau of Prisons for the next 4-years. A senseless sentence, no crime was committed, there were no victims. Corrupt federal prosecutors at the SDNY with an agenda lied & cheated to make this happen. Code ≠ crime.

Keonne is beginning this new year in the confines of a prison, serving a 5 year sentence for a crime he did not commit. Meanwhile, Bill is preparing to turn himself in tomorrow, facing his own 4 year sentence. This somber start casts a shadow over this upcoming year.
The number of new signatures on the petition seeking a pardon has dwindled significantly, and the focus of bitcoin and cryptocurrency news has turned to other matters.
“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” - I hope you take this sentiment to heart into 2026

Tonight is the last time I will sleep in my own bed next to my loving wife. For the next 5 years I will be housed in a federal prison at taxpayer expense for a "crime" without a victim. Just one of many victims of lawfare perpetrated by a weaponized Biden DOJ where truth and justice were sidelined in favor of a political anti innovation agenda. Where evidence was hidden and suppressed because it didn't fit the story highly partisan line prosecutors needed to tell. Where Supreme Court precedence was ignored by activist judges.
Tomorrow I will surrender to FPC Morgantown. I will no longer be Keonne Rodriguez inside that institution, instead I will be a number, 11404-511. But outside of those walls my name will be kept alive. My loving wife, my family, my friends, all of you who have supported #pardonsamourai will make sure of that. I know walking into that institution that the story doesn't end there.
I maintain hope that President @realDonaldTrump is a fair man, a man of the people, who will see this prosecution for what it was: an anti innovation, anti american, attack on the rights and liberties of free people. I believe his team @AGPamBondi @EdMartinDOJ @DAGToddBlanche and others truly want to end the weaponization of the DOJ that the previous administration wielded so effectively.
The framers of our Constitution gave the Executive the power to pardon for exactly this reason, to balance out and restore justice when no one else would. President Trump has proven he takes that power seriously. I believe he will continue to wield that power for good and pardon me and Bill.
Keep up the noise. Thank you all for your support. See you on the other side.
