An excerpt below from the brilliant ‘Personality Syndromes’ paper by @JonathanShedler (reference jonathanshedler.com/wp-conte… ) I think about this often, and it really gets to the heart of what it’s all about. I’m in the infancy of my career in this field, but this is central 4me.

Edward Hopper, Hotel Lobby, 1943. Modern loneliness? Hopper made ten studies before settling on the final scene. In the sketches, the older couple were talking. In the painting, the silence says it all. Three strangers sharing a room, each lost in their own world.

“Do you feel in charge?” Tom Hardy makes Bane terrifying in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (2012) without raising his voice or throwing a punch.
What are the greatest “you have absolutely no idea who you’re messing with” scenes in movie history? When some arrogant punk picks a fight with the wrong person and realizes far too late that they’re completely out of their depth. The bar fight in JACK REACHER and the biker bar scene in TERMINATOR 2 are perfect examples. What other scenes belong on this list?

Sylvester Stallone’s crowning achievement will always be the script for the first Rocky, a film that’s now officially 50 years old. The lore behind this film & Stallone is real & nor exaggerated - Stallone went to hell & back to make this movie. It’s a piece of Cinema history. Not to mention a winner of the Oscar for Best Picture.

SWINGERS turns 30 today. Jon Favreau wrote the screenplay in 10 days, drawing on his own struggles as an actor in LA after a breakup. The film turned his real-life frustrations into the indie comedy that helped launch his & Vince Vaughn’s careers.

OBRA MAESTRA

What I love about good art/film/literature is that it doesn’t instruct, or demand, or assume it has answers, or has an elixir. But, it has the capacity to genuinely move you in a moment and tap into something which isn’t something you are necessarily consciously aware of, it also gently poses a question, for which the aim is not to find an ‘answer’ but to expand your perhaps narrow perspective (people who struggle mentally in some conditions, often have such a narrow field of focus). In mental health care etc I feel it’s chronically underused, I have so much respect for psychiatry and psychology and despite the detractors there are and always will be a significant role for these disciplines but the arts will always offer a valid and thought provoking angle on things!

SLEEPERS turns 30 today. The film’s source novel sparked a major controversy over its claim to be a true story. Author Lorenzo Carcaterra stood by his account, but journalists and New York authorities found no records substantiating the events.

The Insider is a film I’m again imploring you to watch if you haven’t yet. This film should be a household title for everyone my generation and younger: it’s relevant, incredibly well-made, and the perfect demonstration of Michael Mann’s brilliance. I will write about this movie for eternity.
