Proud to share @dccapscholars' FY26 Impact Report: 76% 5-yr grad rate. 3x the grad rate for First-Gen Low-Income students. We've effectively eliminated the higher ed achievement gap. Now we’re working to bring this opportunity to more D.C. students. impact.dccap.org

A school-zone gun law could allow the D.C. Attorney General’s Office to petition a judge to charge a teen accused of armed burglary as an adult. Should they?
After a wave of youth crime, a D.C. neighborhood grapples with what to do:

Happening now: I'm at a Ward 7 community meeting where top MPD brass including Chief Carroll are answering residents' questions and concerns about the recent burglary spree. Earlier this week, 4 13- and 14- year-old boys were arrested in connection with 8 burglaries.
One resident notes some of the break-ins happened in broad daylight and says "it seems like there is no fear of consequences."
To that, CM Wendell Felder blames "the whole notion of ok if I’m under 18, I’ll commit a crime and then I’ll be out — that’ s a real mentality.”
"There needs to be accountability," he added. "I would have got a ferocious butt-whooping."
They tried to break into our home 2x on the same night in Aug. By our neighborhood acct, they attempted to get into 11 homes. Succeeded at 4. Looks like the gun was w/in 1000 feet of park/school so could possibly try as adults. @JudgeJeanine
Four teens — one 13, three 14 — face charges in a string of eight burglaries in NE D.C.
The home invasions all occurred within a month and escalated over time, beginning Sept. 5 with the unlawful entry of empty homes and culminating Oct. 2 in an armed invasion during which police say one teen held down and attempted to sexually assault a resident.
First-degree burglary is among the short list of crimes for which D.C. teens ages 16+ can be tried as adults. These boys are too young to be tried as adults under current D.C. law, though the House passed a bill last year to give USAO Jeanine Pirro the authority to prosecute teens as young as 14. The bill has since stalled in the Senate.

DCPS’s success at achieving what is achievable in education — broadly better results, not an end to inequality — is worth more attention and has been terribly under-covered by our local newspaper.

Congratulations to the MacArthur High School Class of 2026! I was honored to speak at the commencement for these remarkable students earlier this month.
Speaking with these graduates reinforced something I’ve always believed: investing in young people is investing in the future of our city.
At @MSE, creating opportunities through education, mentorship and community partnerships remains one of our most important priorities.
The future of DC is bright – and it’s in great hands. 🎓👏
These young people are spectacular.
Video look back below from our college graduation receiption for @dccapscholars Class of 2026!
Earlier this month, we gathered at Turning the Tassel 2026 to honor more than 150 DC CAP scholars who earned their college degrees this year — our inaugural celebration honoring graduates from across every one of our University Partners.
Watch the recap and hear from our scholars (and the people who believed in them), in their own words. ⬇️

It was inspiring to join @dccapscholars in celebrating this year’s graduates who are taking the next step toward higher education. This organization continues to create life-changing pathways for young people across our city through access, mentorship and support.
The next generation of leaders is already here – and it’s on all of us to keep opening doors for them. Congratulations to this year’s graduates! 🎓
At our celebration event last night a mother of one of our scholars came up to me and said, "thanks to you, my son is now the first male in our family to graduate from college." She started to cry, and then I started to cry, so we just hugged.
That's what it's all about.
What an incredible evening! 🎉
Yesterday at Philippe Chow DC, we celebrated Turning the Tassel 2026 — our inaugural celebration for our DC CAP graduating scholars. For the first time in our history, we honored scholars from every one of our University Partners in one room. 💜
Thank you to our President & CEO, @ewwaldo, and Board Chair, @TedLeonsis — and to the families, coaches, partners, sponsors, and donors who filled the room. The work that got us here didn't start last night. You've been showing up for these students for years. 👏
Such a special evening. Our scholars are amazing and will do big things with their degrees!!
