I was hoping to avoid writing something like this today, alas… There are no words that sufficiently capture the depravity of this statement. The moral inversion. The brazen dishonesty. The obscenity of invoking Oct 7, the day Jews were hunted down, tortured, raped, kidnapped, and murdered by genocidal terrorists, in order to push another round of self-serving propaganda. Yet it’s entirely on brand for Mr. Mayor and his ilk. Mamdani is not unique. He is no different than so many who came before him who traffic in conspiracy and grievance against Jews in order to accumulate political and social power. That is the thing to understand about antisemitism. It isn’t plain old bigotry. It is a construct of lies which casts Jews as uniquely malevolent, powerful, and somehow threatening to what a society most values. Throughout history, ambitious people have figured out that this construct is incredibly handy if what you want is power. The last 3 years have offered a particularly ugly manifestation of this, as we have witnessed a highly coordinated campaign to paint the world’s sole Jewish state, and anyone unwilling to traffic in lies and denounce it, as uniquely evil. The “genocide” accusation has been the most lurid and consequential part of that campaign. The goal, of course, is to recast Jews from victims (of the most grizzly genocide in history) to perpetrators…which then enables a permission structure in which hatred becomes righteous, hostility justified, and ultimately lays the ground for the erasure of Jews from polite society. At the risk of giving pleasure to those who enjoy watching people like me turn out our pockets, it’s worth repeating: To, at this point especially, describe Israel’s war in Gaza a “genocide” one must be either, a) a Grade A ignoramous who is illiterate, innumerate, and wholly impervious to facts and reason, or b) a cynical liar who understands exactly what they are doing and is perfectly happy to smear the one Jewish state and Jews writ large. This is what makes the statement below so ugly, yet so revealing. To reduce Hamas’s actions to “war crimes” when on the morning of 10/7...*checks notes*…there was no war in Gaza, is to simply launder terrorist atrocity. That morning, Hamas fighters invaded Israeli communities to murder civilians, kidnap families, and terrorize a nation. Not only that, but they filmed their ecstasy-filled rampage and shared it for the whole world to see, proud of their handiwork. The brutality and savagery wasn’t some byproduct of a military operation or noble "resistance," but it was the entire point! Israel responded, as any other nation would, by going to war to destroy the organization that carried out the massacre and promised to do it again and again. In a saner time, Israel's war will be studied as a masterclass of urban combat. Israel operated in an environment where the enemy statedly sought to maximize death of its own people, and yet still the civilian to combat ratio was <2:1. Sure, one can scrutinize Israeli decisions. You can criticize strikes. Hell, even call these actions “war crimes.” But to call it “genocide” and intentionally invert the distinction between a terrorist org gleefully massacring civilians with a state waging a war is is not moral sophistication, it is complete and utter moral confusion…and worse it is monstrous propaganda. And yet we now have politicians, activists, academics, braindead celebrities, and armies of credulous fools parroting the same grotesque narrative so often that the repetition itself has become fact. For some this is pure ignorance; the byproduct of an algo-mediated information diet. For others it is ideological. And still for others it's pure cynical opportunism. Antisemitism is the world’s most durable conspiracy because it offers great rewards for those who deftly wield it, whether that be political power or clicks and likes. Enough. If you have spent the last several years trafficking in these lies you have revealed yourself to be an idiot or an asshole. These lies need to be called out, the moral inversion should be laid bare, and the politicians who exploit both should be judged accordingly.
This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss. The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them – all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes. Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment. To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity.

A series of open miracles on the flydubai flight that very nearly went down with a plane full of passengers. Miracle 1: A plane full of people survived an attempt by the copilot to crash their aircraft. Passengers and crew broke into the cockpit and subdued the attacker after he stabbed the captain. Miracle 2: Two off-duty flydubai pilots happened to be on board. They took control of the plunging aircraft and landed it safely. Miracle 3: The plane plummeted and spun out of control - spiraling some 17,000 feet. It ultimately touched down with a chunk of its rudder missing. Miracle 4: They landed in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has no diplomatic relations with Israel. Yet when an aircraft carrying Israelis was in mortal danger, Saudi Arabia became their refuge. Saudi authorities received them, kept them safe, and got them onto a replacement aircraft that flew them directly from Saudi soil to Tel Aviv. For all the reasons to despair about the Middle East, don't miss what happened today.

It's super cool how Trump canceled fuel efficiency standards, electric vehicle rebates, and illegally ended billions upon billions of dollars of wind and solar energy projects already under construction just before he blew up the entire Middle East for no fucking reason.

It has now been confirmed that the Islamic regime in Iran has murdered at least 100,000 civilians, half of them under 18, whose sole crime was protesting for freedom. Macklemore and Ms. Rachel haven’t said a single word. Weird.

There is no such thing as an early flight. 100% of flights that land early involve waiting for the gate to be “ready”.

A bit of important context on Israel/Gaza that I think we forget. Despite Hamas (a known terrorist organization) being formally in control of Gaza, starting around 2019, Israel began actively issuing work permits and expanded employment access for Gazans. By October 2023, roughly 18,000 Gazans had permits to work in Israel. Those jobs paid considerably more than comparable work in Gaza, and Israeli policymakers viewed the permits partly as an economic incentive that could reduce instability and give Gaza residents (and indirectly Hamas) something to lose from a conflict. Hamas appears to have deliberately reinforced Israel's belief that it was increasingly focused on governing Gaza and economic development rather than preparing for a major war. Reuters, citing a source close to Hamas and an Israeli security source, reported that Hamas used a prolonged deception strategy: while Israel was providing economic incentives to Gazan workers, Hamas was simultaneously training for the October 7 attack. reuters.com/world/middle-eas… So my question is...put yourself in the shoes of Israel. What would you do?

Benghazi cost four American lives at a single compound, and Congress gave it ten investigations and two years of televised fury. Beirut in 1983 produced a commission within weeks, and Pearl Harbor had its inquiry inside eleven days. That is how a serious country treats a military disaster. This week the Pentagon's own inspector general confirmed that Iran has damaged or destroyed hundreds of buildings at American bases in eight countries, along with dozens of aircraft. Neither Vietnam, Iraq nor Afghanistan ever saw the American footprint across a whole region hammered at once, and the public only learned of it because soldiers leaked photographs while Hegseth shrugged about the occasional "squirter." General Caine warned before the first bomb fell that stockpiles and defences were not ready. Hegseth, a former television host, has since fired or blocked more than eighty generals and admirals, so the war is being run with the adults removed from the building. When a Republican congressman filed eight articles of impeachment this week, the Speaker sent the House home early rather than allow a vote. zerohedge.com/geopolitical/u…

It would appear that picking a military leader because he "looks tough on TV" and "is straight from central casting" is a bad rubric for leadership selection.

History is very consistent over many centuries: those who attack their neighbors, initiate wars, and lose always face restrictions on their actions for some time period during which it is incumbent upon them to demonstrate their ability to be peaceful neighbors.
