Macklemore didn’t get censored, he got unbooked. There’s a difference. Venues on Ed Sheeran’s US tour told the promoter they would not put a show on with Macklemore on the lineup after his anti-Israel rant at MetLife. That’s their right and it’s the smart business move. Macklemore is free to give his opinion but he’s also free to accept responsibility for it. That’s what’s happened here. Messina Touring Group dropped Macklemore from the remaining Ed Sheeran dates rather than blow up the tour. They did the right thing. Concerts are supposed to be an escape and a pleasure. That’s what they’re trying to preserve. Macklemore can say what he wants onstage. The stadium doesn’t have to keep him on the bill. Sheeran’s tour is a business with hundreds of thousands of tickets already sold. The venues in Philly, Foxborough, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Charlotte, Arlington, and Tampa looked at Macklemore and said no. If his politics are the product now, he can sell that product on his own bill. Say it on your own stage. Don’t act shocked when someone else’s stage says no. That’s the basics of free speech and capitalism. Macklemore just got an education.
