The point no one makes about the UK's return to Erasmus+, and a metaphor for Brexit as a whole, is the failure of its own replacement Turing scheme - heralded as "world-beating" by Johnson (wasn't everything ? 🤡) but with much less funding and way fewer opportunities and which is being faded out - on the quiet
Hence the somewhat "tail between legs" return today to something approaching, but not really as good as, what the UK once had, but gave up ...

Six years after it was ripped away, Erasmus is coming back, and it did not happen by accident.
This is the result of sustained campaigning, pressure applied week after week, and a refusal to accept that young people should pay the price for Brexit. Doors that were closed are reopening, and the opportunities that were taken away are finally being restored.

Today, we make further steps in our renewed EU-UK strategic partnership.
We have concluded the negotiations for the UK’s association to Erasmus+ in 2027.
Bringing back Erasmus+ for our young people, opening the door to new shared experiences and lasting friendships.
And we have concluded exploratory talks on the UK’s participation in the EU’s internal electricity market
Together, we are committed to continue delivering on our common agenda in time for our next EU-UK Summit.

Rejoining Erasmus is the best morning news for weeks. Another important stepping stone in the re-association with our continent and our friends. Above all opportunities restored to our youth. theguardian.com/world/2025/d…

Great news. This opens up exciting opportunities for young people, giving Londoners, Brits & their European counterparts access to a wealth of possibilities.
At a time of global uncertainty, strengthening our partnership with the EU is a win-win for growth and prosperity 💙💛

Today, the EU gets lectured about “free speech” for trying to make platforms more transparent… 🇪🇺
Meanwhile, the US is considering blocking entry if your social media looks politically inconvenient 😇
Even travellers from France — no visa required — would have to hand over 5 years of posts.
A very curious way to defend “freedom”, privacy and personal data 🤔
BREAKING:
🇺🇸 3-month visa-free stay in the US if
you submit five years of social media history under new Customs and Border Protection plans
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is proposing new rules set to go into effect early next year that could require foreign visitors to submit up to five years of social media history when applying for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which allows citizens of 42 countries to visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa.
In June, the U.S. State Department also issued instructions to screen for advocacy for, aid, or support for foreign 'terrorists' and other threats to U.S. national security, as well as 'support for unlawful antisemitic harassment or violence.'
If you prove that you have supported Israel on social media and you didn't support any groups that US labels them as "terrorists" for the last 5 years you will probably be approved.

OH NO! Not the bilingual weans!! ANYTHING BUT the bilingual weans.
In a country where barely anyone can be bothered learning another language, children talented enough to speak several are a boon.
What’s the policy platform here? Banning multilingual children from education?

“On regrette jamais de s’être baigné.”
Depuis le 5 juillet dernier, il est possible de se baigner dans la Seine à Paris. Alors, un mois après l’ouverture des 3 sites de baignade, on est allé voir sur place, au bras Marie, pour voir comment ça se passait… Et on y a croisé pas mal de baigneurs heureux.

I was explaining to my Ukrainian colleague the phrase ‘There’s no such thing as a free lunch’. She told me the equivalent in Ukrainian is ‘The only free cheese is in the mousetrap’ - which is so much better
