I'm excited to announce that my book "The New York School: Poetry, Art, and Friendship in Midcentury Manhattan" will be published by Knopf in March. It's a group biography of the New York School of Poets, centered on John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, James Schuyler, and Kenneth Koch.

Mel Brooks grabs us by the lapels and screams into our faces, "Laugh! It's funny!" The open secret of his comedy is that his material isn't necessarily funny—it's being grabbed by the lapels that makes us laugh. (It's being grabbed by the lapels that makes us stop laughing, too.)
Forgive the self-indulgence but I just got a draft of the index for my New York School book and I need to share some excerpts
