Hearing from the rumor mill: a frontier lab is preparing to release a new model that is better than their old model. In response, other frontier labs are reportedly releasing new models that are better than their old models. One of these will be the best. It may be a surprise.

I doubt they used Go for this thing. Probably Python.

Software engineers are supposed to do exactly what we’ve always done. Ensure that the composition and structure of the system is robust and maintainable and that the behavior of the system properly serves the needs of our users. This requires engineering discipline. It need not require detailed reading of the code; just as using compilers does not require detailed reading of the binary.

i think sama deserves great credit for this. openai, for better or worse, is very defensive of employee freedom of speech. anthropic‘s culture is a follow on to this. it’s rare to see much from X or GDM or Meta
Can someone explain to me why OpenAI and Anthropic allow any employee to tweet anything they want. Apple, Google, Facebook, Nvidia, Microsoft, Tesla, Uber and Airbnb all have obvious and granular rules about e employees speaking for the company. Which is to say, employees should never say anything publicly unless it's cleared with comms first which isn't intended to censor anyone, just to make sure the company is aligned and marching in unison I could never imagine tweeting the stuff that OpenAI and Anthropic employees are tweeting without checking with the CEO and founders first! So are these P-doomers clearing their tweets with the CEO and comms?

Disgusted with juvenile responses to the AI risk debate from the tech-optimist crowd, attempts to pooh-pooh it, dismiss it as a psyop/PR, or appeal to Chyna. People are scared for sound reasons. Even purely instrumentally: you'll get steamrolled with this bullshit. Get real.

Some thoughts, welcoming feedback: 1. If the frontier labs feel obligated to build something they think is dangerous because China is going to build it anyway, we'd better be really sure that China is going to build it anyway. Like, really, really, really sure. Are we? Are we actually sure? The CCP wants to build an out-of-control, recursively self-improving model bc its neurotically, control-obsessed government thinks this is a policy worth pursing? We're 100% sure about that? 2. At the very least, we know that Chinese models distill American models to keep up with the frontier. So, any slowdown by the US seems like it would mechanically and automatically slow the ability of China to distill its way to progress. If we're afraid of the rate of progress, isn't that a good thing?
The AI warnings coming out in the last 24 hours are deadly serious. But any efforts to slow the pace of development & implement guardrails have to be global. It’s meaningless for the US to self-regulate when China continues advancing.

We could have all woken up to “OpenAI and Anthropic team up, solve Navier-Stokes cleanly, fully formalized but also here is a nice explanation by Tao, here’s how we can all happily improve math together” but alas, the world does not yet work that way.

The obvious move is to distribute the gains from AI quickly and broadly to the American people via a dividend/UBI. That would improve people’s attitudes very quickly.

Love the snark about the 5%, leaving out the glaring detail that anyone with an IQ above 60 who wants OpenAI models is using them in Codex
We’re sorry to see that OpenAI put out a note saying they plan to block Cursor users from accessing OpenAI models in three months. OpenAI models serve about 5% of Cursor user traffic, and we’re speaking with the OpenAI team to resolve this. Cursor was one of the very first users of OpenAI, we’ve worked closely with their team for years, and we’ve trusted their platform to be neutral infrastructure for our business.

Code models that can't look at a screenshot of an issue are wholly disinteresting to me. Vision capability is a base level requirement IMO

I live in a nice neighborhood. I will never understand how people that are so well off can be so cheap and mean to household employees. Especially those taking care of your kids and being in your house! Take care of people, folks. One of my neighbors called me a communist in the street because I said I provide healthcare and pay taxes (you know, don’t pay under the table). I took it as a compliment.

Pangram is good, but has some well-known failure modes, like: - A time you heard it didn't work - A school essay you wrote years ago that it flagged as AI (you don't have a link or the essay text handy) - A different AI detector got it wrong, and they're all the same, right?

This is kinda like Citadel vs Leopold Aschenbrenner but for vibe coders
major price cuts today: *80% drop for GPT-5.6 Luna, now $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output *20% drop for GPT-5.6 Terra, to $2/$12 *GPT-5.6 Sol gets Fast mode in the API, up to 2.5x the speed for 2x the price, same intelligence

"I use Claude Code" is the new "I'm not technical" in SF
Sam Altman reveals building Codex was a "crazy kamikaze mission" to beat Claude Code and that most of the best coders he knows now use Codex. "We were way behind Claude Code, and it seemed like a kind of crazy kamikaze mission to try to beat them with a coding app." "The consensus is that this kind of thing never works, and you just move on to the next one. It's a fool's errand to try to win when someone else already has momentum in a particular product category." "But we decided we thought it was really important. We asked a team to do it, and they performed a legitimate, unbelievable, very rare in the history of business thing." "Now it is the product that most of the best coders I know use." "That felt like an impossible thing, but if we hadn't asked the team, hey, we have a really important but extremely hard mission for you, it just wouldn't have happened."
