WHY THE PUBLIC SUFFIX LIST IS NO LONGER FIT FOR PURPOSE
β
Browsers depend on the Public Suffix List for security boundaries, yet smaller platforms face barriers to inclusion. Is the decades-old system overdue for replacement?

Today ICANN revealed the new gTLD round.
One application for .ens, and it's ours, uncontested. No auction, no rival claim, just process ahead.
One string, one applicant, one job: we are here to innovate at the seam of web2 and web3 until names simply work everywhere.

gm, we're the ENS Foundation π
Our mandate: represent ENS at ICANN, IETF and W3C, pursue stewardship of the .ens TLD, engage on policy, and protect the brand, alongside @ensdomains and the ENS DAO.
Here's who's behind it π§΅...

If you own a .eth name, this affects you. Here's what it means, with examples for non-technical people π§΅

The transfer of Durin.dev to ENS Labs is complete!
Durin is an opinionated approach to issuing ENS L2 subnames
It was originally developed by NameStone under an ENS DAO Grant program
Since launching in 2024 Durin has been used at every major ENS Hackathon, with overwhelmingly positive feedback from hackers
With NameStone shutting down earlier this year, Durin was left without an active maintainer
Working with @gregskril and @Jefflau, we transferred all relevant assets to ENS Labs, including:
- Durinβ .dev domain name
- GitHub repo
- Associated infra and smart contract ownership
I am confident that this is the best home for Durin and I hope developers will continue to build on Durin for years to come
It's been an honor to contribute enduring work to ENS

The cryptographic world computer:

My attempt to express in somewhat concise terms the true meaning of basically everything planned to happen to Ethereum starting from the fork after Hegota. It's really not just a blockchain anymore. It's a hybrid architecture that combines together blockchains and modern cryptography, to enable much more powerful properties.
FOCIL, EIP-8288, Lean consensus, state management, formal verification, advanced mempool improvements (including privacy), and the longer-term specter of obfuscation all mentioned.

Reminder: you can now sync an ethereum node within half a day and with aggressive settings the space it takes up on disk can be under half a terabyte.
EIP-4444 and hard work by client teams on optimizing snap sync has improved things *a lot*.
Glamsterdam will improve the sync situation further still (eg. Nimbus's new sync protocol uses it)

There's a deep duality between the two environments. Both are about a less-sophisticated principal trying to get ideal outcomes from a set of more-sophisticated agents: in the first case, the principal is a static algorithm and the agents are humans, in the second case, the principal is humans plus weaker LLMs and the agents are stronger LLMs.
A key finding was that you can achieve much better outcomes if you can guarantee limits to how much agents can collude (see: Nash equilibria being abundant, vs. cooperative-game-theory "cores" often being empty). That argument should naturally transfer to this new setting.

My third (and last) post in my series on obfuscation (iO): local mixing
vitalik.eth.limo/general/202β¦
Local mixing is a very different philosophy from the other two, no prior background in lattices required, and very different tradeoffs (eg. in terms of computational overhead, it's viable today; the entire question is verifying the security of what's ultimately a novel family of cryptography). I highly encourage following their work, they plan to publish much more soon.
