Day one at ANME. Our stand is still in customs. What we have with us: two power boxes and a handful of electrodes. Whatever we could grab and stuff into hand luggage before we left for the airport. So we improvised. Our product display is now an iPad running a slideshow of phone videos we've shot in the workshop over the last twenty-two years. Put together this morning. Thanks, Apple. The rest of it, two crates of aluminium, stainless steel and 3D printed British-made kit, is in a warehouse in Los Angeles. Here's how that happened. We shipped from Watford two weeks early, deliberately, because we've done this before and we know how it goes. Carnet, temporary import, everything declared, nothing for sale. DHL Express told us the power of attorney was already on file. Then it wasn't. Or it was, but they wanted a new one. Nobody could tell us which. Three days of the same form. Signed, scanned, emailed. Signed again. Scanned again. Emailed again. Electronic signatures have been legally valid in the UK since 2000, and yet there we were photographing paper with a PDF app on my wife's phone, because I didn't have one installed. They were confused by British date formats. They were confused by "Managing Director", which apparently needed translating into "CEO". They asked for my passport. They asked for my social security number, which was interesting, because I'm British and I don't have one. I was half expecting them to want my inside leg measurement. Then it went to CBP. On a Saturday. While we were in the air. This morning at 6am, day one of the show, they decided the shipment needs FDA approval. It doesn't. Meanwhile @dhlexpressuk describe themselves as "global delivery specialists, helping businesses to grow. Follow us for export, import, e-commerce, and business advice." Last week they were at Goodwood with Formula E. Performance, innovation and sustainability. They fly Formula E round the world to a deadline. Cars that sound like electric lawnmowers. We sent two crates of aluminium and stainless steel. Quieter. Considerably more shock value. And they last longer than the Energizer Bunny. Still in customs. Genuine question, and I'd like a real answer rather than a call centre. How does a small British manufacturer get the motorsport service? Do we have to name a team after you?
