I don’t know what in the Uncle Rico I just watched at the gym.
I’m not saying you were or were not “in the nfl combine back in the day” but I am assuring you that poor woman was not buying it and was not into you and your cowboy boot lifting 225 chest press talk.

Are we helping kids… or teaching them to run from hard things?
I see this all the time in schools.
A student has a problem with a teacher, coach, classmate, or situation, and too often the first response is to remove the problem.
Switch the class.
Quit the team.
Avoid the conversation.
Have the parent step in and fix it.
I understand the instinct. We don’t want to see our kids struggle.
But Dr. Becky Kennedy said something powerful:
“The more you optimize for happiness in childhood, the more you actually wire for anxiety in adulthood.”
Kids need to learn that disappointment is survivable.
Conflict is survivable.
Failure is survivable.
Being uncomfortable is survivable.
Sometimes the best thing we can do for kids isn’t remove the hard thing.
It’s help them learn how to walk through it.
September is coming to a close in a little over an hour and so is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. A friend’s son has been battling cancer since 2012 when he was just 4 years old. In May he graduated from high school. Today they are left praying for a miracle. Perspective.

Hard work never guarantees you get hits & it never guarantees your team wins games, but it will guarantee you become more successful at life!!!

School has begun so our summer failure is official: we only spotted 48 of 50 state license plates on the road. Vermont and Delaware eluded us.

Kobe Bryant explains why self-negotiation is the enemy of greatness.
"You just got to say: I'm not negotiating with myself. The deal was already made."
"The deal was made when I set out at the beginning of the summer and said this is the training plan I'm doing. I signed that contract with myself. I'm doing it."
Commitment is a choice. And the voice in your head will always try to give you an out.
You have to be greater than your self-talk and your excuses.
"Throughout that process you'll start talking to yourself like: man, I think I need to maybe... Nope. No. It's non-negotiable."
Make the commitment.
Honor the commitment.
No exceptions.

The kid and I made a pact to ‘use our summer wisely’. Just calculated our June/July numbers. Me: 393 miles walked and 40 weightlifting sessions. Him: 119.5 hours of focused basketball work (tourneys and 3v3 games NOT included). Goals accomplished! Bring on the school year!!
Just finished Dan Hurley’s book Never Stop: Life, Leadership, and What it Takes to be Great. All these years of loving to hate him down the drain.
