New Yorkers: Tonight's forecast calls for potentially life-threatening flooding, especially for those living in basement apartments and neighborhoods that have flooded before. Heavy rain is expected to begin this afternoon and continue overnight. While not every neighborhood will experience the same conditions, dangerous flash flooding can develop quickly anywhere in the city. If you live in a basement apartment or an area that has flooded before, don't wait to prepare. Sign up for basement apartment alerts at on.nyc.gov/basements and pack a Go Bag with medications, a flashlight, batteries, a portable phone charger, important documents in waterproof bags, and other essentials. Make a plan now for where you'll go if your home begins to flood, whether that's a neighbor's apartment on a higher floor or one of the 51 safe overnight locations we're opening across all five boroughs. Safe overnight locations will open tonight at 8 p.m. and remain available for as long as dangerous conditions persist. Pets and service animals are welcome. Call 311 or visit on.nyc.gov/SafeLocations to find the location closest to you. If flooding begins where you are, move to higher ground immediately. Stay out of flooded streets, and never drive through floodwaters. If you are trapped or in immediate danger, call 911.
