fundamentally I think it is bad for this country if you follow the rules and correctly obtain a permit and are still denied for arbitrary political reasons, even if I would rather you not build the thing you got a permit for.

Reminder that my City Councilwoman is a hot mess and has less integrity than the foundation of a bando. Easily the worst politician I can think of. Terrible person and leader.

West Village bars, restaurants face city scrutiny over zoning, licenses at council member’s request crainsdetroit.com/restaurant…
Yesterday, CW Renata Miller ordered BSEED to shut down Two Birds on Kercheval, days after proposing Ng a special resolution to shut down any alcohol-serving restaurant on the street. This is abuse of power. @detroitnews @samueljrob @jcreindl @BridgeDet313 please cover this
Hey @modeld @BridgeDet313 @media_outlier @freep I feel like you should cover how the new Councilmember Renata Miller killed affordable housing and is trying to kill some of the only functioning small businesses on Kercheval which occupy or are filling previously vacant buildings

Council Member Renata Miller is requesting BSEED to look into the zoning and acceptable use of Two Birds and other beloved businesses on Kercheval. She's weaponizing zoning to kill our small businesses. This is NOT what I or my neighbors want.

My latest for @TheEconomist: AI writing is taking over politics.
10% of what was is said in Parliament is now AI-drafted, per Pangram. Yet more in the House of Representatives, or in Australia and Canada.

🚨 At the U20 Mayors Summit, Mamdani Says the Left Has Ceded “Quality of Life,” “Efficiency,” and “Fraud and Waste” to the Right
This was one of the more interesting arguments Zohran Mamdani made today at the U20 Mayors Summit, and a reminder that he can be genuinely sharp when he drops the “central casting” routine.
“In New York City, there are certain words that have taken on ideological associations.”
“Quality of life has come to be seen as somehow a right-wing concern. Efficiency… has been taken on as a right-wing concern, rooting out fraud and waste, a right-wing concern.”
Mamdani’s argument is that refusing to engage those issues actually helps the Right.
“If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’”
The harder question is how much of the broader Left is actually prepared to follow the advice.

American foreign policy under Trump is not isolationist. On the contrary, MAGA ideologues want to build an international empire run by far-right political movements who serve the interests of American crypto, mineral and tech companies, especially if they have links to the president. They think of themselves as "the vanguard of a movement that will alter not just America, but the world."

The big SUVs, the wide roads, the shopping centers, the bulk food, the wide shopping carts, the 2,000+ sqft houses are all personal choices in no way shaped by government policy… actually it’s all dictated by government policies that were influenced by big business & lobbyists.
This is dumb and ignorant on so many levels. Suburbs are not vast deserts where grocery stores are a day’s journey away. They’re all 10-15 minutes away, no matter where you are. Even in very rural areas, there is likely a Walmart within 20-30 minutes.
Also, nobody is using their home like a food warehouse. There’s a fridge and a pantry. Maybe a garage freezer. That’s it.
People in suburbs buy more per trip because it’s easier, it’s cheaper, they have cars, and their families are bigger. Turns out you can get more in one trip when you don’t have to carry everything on your walk home. It also turns out that people prefer to not run the same errand every single day because that would be a gigantic pain in the butt and a waste of time. And you have to buy more when you’re feeding six people than you do when you’re only cooking for yourself.
You pathologize and theorize about these things as if you’ve never talked to a normal person or been in a normal house. We’re not talking about splitting the atom here. Just ask a normal person why they go to Walmart or Costco or buy groceries in batches. “It’s cheaper and easier.” Tada!

250K homes and businesses are still without power after yesterday’s storms.
Michigan has the slowest power restoration after storms in the nation, yet we have the highest energy bills in the Midwest.
Why? Utilities like DTE are ripping us off.
(1/4)
More than 60% of all power outages currently in America are in Michigan.
Pretty much every time there are minor storms, our state soars to #1 in power outages and stays that way for a while due to slow restore times:

The Biden administration proved that many progressives (not most though!) never really cared about climate change, ending wars, student loan debt relief, labor investments, and more.
For many of us, it was/is a shocking revelation.

Let’s be clear on some things:
- Winning by less than 1% and not even crossing 50% does not give you a mandate
- Not winning working class votes, even though that’s who you claim you’re for says a lot
- Resoundingly losing Black & Jewish voters does not bode well for the general

honestly still baffles me every single day that it is so fucking hard to convince people of the idea that if there are too few homes for people to live in we should allow people to build more of them

Incredible that we wasted the 2000s-2010s low interest free money phase of the US economy completely on making a million versions of Doordash instead of building useful infrastructure

There is now a solid body of evidence showing that internet availability is causing a variety of outcomes that adversely affect democracy
The answer may have something to do with platform algorithms, such as curated newsfeeds (e.g., on Facebook) or ranking of posts (e.g., the “for you” feed on X).
Algorithms have long been in the sights of researchers and regulators as potential culprits of polarization because of their opacity and their known focus on maximizing user engagement and platform dwell time with little regard for the quality of curated content. science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…
