Bob Hope's NBC contract made him more money than most Hollywood studios were paying their entire rosters. John Wayne had been the #1 box office draw in America for 25 consecutive years. Dean Martin was selling out every casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Combined, the four men in that room were worth over $600 million. Ronald Reagan was Governor of California and already had his eye on something much bigger than Sacramento. In 1970, all four of them ended up in the same room. In the video below, Reagan reveals he vetoed a bill the California legislature passed in Bob Hope's honor - then told Hope about it to his face. Reagan walked out as governor and immediately started making jokes about moving boxes. The crowd already knew what he meant. He wasn't being subtle. Everyone in that room understood that Sacramento was just a stop on a much longer road. He told the audience Hope had entertained over 10 million troops. Been seen by 100 million TV viewers. Built a career that spanned vaudeville, radio, film, and television without missing a single era. Then he said if you threw in the 27 people who'd actually seen his movies, you had yourself a pretty sizable voting constituency. Then Reagan paused. He told Hope the California state legislature had unanimously passed a bill naming him the state's foremost citizen. He vetoed it. The room lost it. Then came John Wayne. Calling in live from Bend, Oregon, mid-shoot on the True Grit sequel with Katharine Hepburn. He got 15 seconds into his tribute before catching himself - he'd just read out the full movie title, the co-star, the director, and the production company on live television. "Wayne, did I do that?" he asked Dean Martin. "Perfect, pal." Four men at the absolute peak of Hollywood and American politics, in one room, genuinely cracking each other up. You don't see rooms like that anymore.

This is the 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐄𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 linked to the first imported case as confirmed by @MOH_Kenya. Is it concerning? Yes … but the reassuring detail is that both secondary cases were detected while already under quarantine and daily monitoring. This means the contact-tracing and quarantine system working as intended. The latest patient is reported to be a 65-year-old woman, who is a close family contact of the index case, and had been under quarantine since 6 October. When she developed symptoms, she was promptly isolated, tested and started on supportive care. Quarantine cannot undo an infection acquired earlier. Its purpose is to identify illness promptly, facilitate early treatment and prevent further spread. Ebola transmission begins after symptoms develop, so contact with someone before they became symptomatic does not, by itself, constitute an Ebola exposure. Detecting these cases within quarantine therefore substantially limits opportunities for onward transmission. The lingering concern remains any untraced contacts of the original patient, and anyone who may have had unprotected exposure to either secondary case after symptoms began, including quarantine staff and health workers involved in care or transfer. These possible exposures need careful assessment before we can be confident that the transmission chain has been contained. There is reason for cautious reassurance. Two secondary cases within a known contact group do not, on their own, establish wider community spread. But every contact must be accounted for and monitored for the full 21 days from their last possible exposure. Clear, regular public updates remain essential. We hope and pray for the full recovery of both patients now under isolation and treatment, and for the protection of their families and the healthcare and quarantine teams supporting them. #Ebola #EbolaKE
Kenya has confirmed a third case of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus. The patient, a 65-year-old woman, is a primary contact and a close relative of the first and second cases and had been under quarantine.

Lemme vent a little. When someone dies, you file death certificates and relevant documents with banks and other organizations like telcos. You expect that having done that, in person or on email, that the account information is updated across several departments. 1/3

Grateful to everyone who joined the recent X Space conversation on Institutionalising the Raila Odinga Legacy: Constitutionalism, Democratic Reform and the Realisation of African Union Agenda 2063, expertly moderated by @EricLatiff. Thank you to our panelists for sharing rigorous insights. The discussion highlighted the forthcoming Special Issue of the Eastern Africa Journal of Policy and Strategy, which examines how Raila Odinga’s reformist struggles and political dividends can be translated into enduring institutions for Kenya and the African continent moving beyond personality to constitutionalism, democratic reform, devolution, and the aspirations of Agenda 2063. As anticipation builds for the publication of this landmark journal issue, the conversation reaffirmed the value of scholarly engagement in securing legacies through strong, accountable institutions rather than individuals alone. Thank you for tuning in and contributing to a dialogue that matters for present and future generations. JKIA remains a critical gateway into the country and a key point in strengthening our preparedness and response to Ebola Virus Disease. Today, we engaged Ministry of Health staff and Kenya Airports Authority staff at JKIA on efforts to close surveillance gaps and strengthen screening and monitoring systems. All designated gates for travellers from high-risk countries are fully equipped and operational to support early detection and protect public health. We urge Kenyans to remain calm, avoid misinformation and continue following Ministry of Health guidelines as we strengthen our collective efforts to safeguard public health.
