The sprint format at the #SingaporeGP looks set to throw up some unexpected challenges for teams on the tyre front this weekend.
The track surface and layout (especially in the cooler race conditions on Sunday evening) favours the soft end of the spectrum, but on sprint weekends the soft allocation goes down.
Teams only get six sets of softs for the weekend (rather than the eight they get with the normal format). It means they are going to have to not burn through them too quickly – and be smart with choices in qualifying.
Another issue too is that in sprint qualifying, use of the medium in SQ1 and SQ2 is mandatory. That is going to be a hard tyre to fire up over a single preparation lap. So it could get quite frantic out there!
Then the sprint will take place in hotter day time temperatures – so tyre management will be tougher than in the normal race. Teams will have to make a call on burning through a soft for performance or staying safe with the medium.
A lot of credit for Red Bull’s win in Malaysia was given to its Baku aero package.
But there was no denying from the telemetry traces, and speed on the straights in Baku, that its power unit has made great strides despite the ADUO verdict meaning it cannot be upgraded.
