"Godspeed, ends your reply. God slow, they write back, if there is a god, it is slow. I reply this is a good line of poetry, joke that I would like to steal it. I am welcome to steal it, they reply..." a knockout today from @sophieklahr havehashad.com/hadposts/on-c

New alignment strategy: keep writing papers about misbehaving AIs until we've enumerated all behaviors that an AI should not become a famous example of (from Gemini 4 Argon's safety report)

We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work. At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated. We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.

# A statistical look back at METR’s time horizons—and a look ahead Here are the 228 software tasks from METR’s time horizons chart, with human completion time (x) against estimated difficulty for AI (y). Does time proxy difficulty well? With @wfithian, I quantified this. đŸ§”

btw in case it’s not clear: All the work like monitorability, fixing RL environments for reward shaping, making sure you universally reward good behavior are all quite important engineering challenges to get right. but there is a layer under the behaviorist abstraction that matters and we have far less grasp on. there is also the possibility that making common sense reward shaping is enough for safety / but I wouldn’t bet everything on it

With recent discussions of EA influence, it’s worth taking a look at the first time an effectiveness-oriented altruistic movement held significant sway over a country: 4th century BC China. The Mohists argued for “impartial care” as the moral standard, prioritized prevention of war as a top cause area, had members take high-paying positions in governments (i.e. the war-making bodies) to try accelerate defense over offense (and sometimes donate gold to the movement), and scorned spending on rituals and ceremonies on grounds that the poor should be given more food instead. The Daoists attacked them for demandingness and the Confucians for treating family like strangers. All lost to the Legalists when the Qin dynasty started. When impartial welfare philosophy came to the West with Bentham, it made a big advance on the Mohists. Mohist doctrine had been afraid of ghosts. Bentham disbelieved ghosts on the grounds that no one ever saw a naked ghost. He was deathly scared of goblins instead.

this seems like a reasonable threat model - more generally, i think we'll have a misuse warning shot soon, the same way we had a cyber warning shot i hope it will not be too destructive, and i hope we don't need multiple such shots. so, we should be ready to act when it happens!
AI Chernobyl is coming. Given our current path, it's really just a matter of time.

Two other safety researchers and I were fired from OpenAI last week. We wrote this letter to leadership. I believe we were fired for prioritizing safety over the near-term interests of OpenAI as a corporation.

All in. Every time. Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle star as Caroline Ellison and Sam Bankman-Fried in this limited series about the love scorned prodigies behind the FTX scandal. The Altruists premieres November 19.

oh, that's not good...
We just updated CI-aware bench, which measures whether frontier models are aware of AI control interventions made to their text. When we first talked about this in spring, most models were near chance, and some readers complained that the bench was unrealistic... Astra nearly saturates it now. For more details, check out Joachim's thread linked below:

FWIW I said something on Dwarkesh last spring: my main worry is that we’ll have a recession at some point but unlike previous ones people will not be hired back as economy recovers.

Personal take: folks should just accept eval-awareness. I think trying to trick AI agents about whether you’re testing them is about as easy/hard as it would be to trick humans about this. Assume that if *you* can tell whether the agent is being eval’ed, the agent can too.

I didn’t really understand until I was a TA seeing this from the outside how much the “I swear I can do the problems, I just fail to perform in the testing environment” is really just not realizing how much you’re using crutches (textbook, notes, etc)
My long-held opinion that "test anxiety" is fake: confirmed. You're anxious because you don't know the material! The anxiety is called not having studied hard enough!
