The evolution of the magnetron — a device for generating microwave radiation — from World War II radar systems to the household microwave ovens illustrates how engineers think about “best.” youtu.be/p8IO9u9IuOs
Charles Parsons designed a superior steam engine called a turbine, but was ignored until he crashed a celebration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. His turbine still generates most electricity. youtu.be/-8lXXg8dWHk
Two examples of how engineers solve problems before they have scientific certainty: How they control whether or not fluid flow is smooth or turbulent, and how they engineer useful enzymes. youtu.be/9RAMqFg7laE

Good news: engineerguy.com got a bit of a facelift and a new hosting service; bad news: SSL problems and slow DNS propagation causing problems — so bear with.
Help! This is a early 1940s magnetron. This photo shows the laminations that create the cavity. These are almost for sure copper: so how was this coated so that it lasts 80 years: surely not paint?
I sent this to the publisher yesterday; editorial done, so this goes to production, next thing I will see is page proofs; continuing pre production for companion videos.
