Excited to share our preprint where we identified impaired mitochondrial metabolism as a driver of epithelial plasticity and primary tumor escape in metastasis. This was a big collaboration with lots of people from VUMC as well as the NCI!
Happy to share @enarner preprint on mitochondrial metabolism and kidney cancer metastasis--This ongoing project started with @KimrynRathmell using patient data to show inhibition of oxphos promotes EMT and primary tumor escape. Great work Emily!

So excited to be at #AACR25 in Chicago and receive a scholar in training award from the Kidney Cancer Association (@kidneycan) and the Chris CJ Johnson foundation (@renalmedullary). I’m learning so much. If you see me around, please say hi! #SITAKIDNEY #DayintheLife @kaydaustin
Finished off the night at the scholar in training reception, where I networked with so many other amazing early-career investigators as well as @kidneycan @KidneyCancer and @kaydaustin!

#UTSW scientists have discovered a mechanism that promotes metastasis in pancreatic, breast, and potentially other cancers along with a new druggable therapeutic target to block it. @brekkenlab @scisignal bit.ly/4ggudoJ

Studying the mechanisms of #EpithelialToMesenchymal transition, researchers investigated the kinase AKT and identified a pathway centered on TBK1 required for EMT and metastatic spread in pancreatic cancer in mice. @UTSWCancerBio @brekkenlab @enarner scim.ag/41KOxea

Long saga, but it is out. @enarner and a host of others pushed this through. Special thanks to Jim Lorens and his lab @UiB
It’s finally out!! It’s been 3 years since I graduated with my PhD from UTSW, but my last first-author paper from grad school and the culmination of my thesis work has finally been published in @scisignal!! science.org/doi/10.1126/scis…
We found that TBK1 activates the specific AKT isoform, AKT3, to drive stability of EMT transcription factors for subsequent EMT and metastasis!
Thanks to Rolf and everyone in the @brekkenlab for not giving up and pushing this out the door! Especially Dina and Jill! I’m extremely grateful to the whole crew and glad to see this out there!

For a PhD student, choosing a good lab is 10 times more important than choosing a particular topic to study
You’ve been staring at ATAC-seq results too long when the mountains start to remind you of chromatin accessibility peaks 🤦🏻♀️ #postdoc #atac #sciencetwitter
What Kelsey said! Congrats to the amazing @DarrenHeintzman! This project was a huge undertaking and it’s a privilege to be a part of it. Check out the latest paper from the @JeffRathmell lab to see how temperature influences immune cells!
Check out the latest drop from the @JeffRathmell lab by the extraordinary @DarrenHeintzman! This project was intellectually stimulating for all in the lab and fun to be a part of. See how temperature impacts T cell metabolism! science.org/doi/10.1126/scii…
