One of my fellow Michiganders posts about how bad the air quality is because of Canadian 🇨🇦 #wildfires, followed by something along the lines of “we should go up there and handle it.” Yeah sure buddy. You head on up there 😂 Every wildfire season, a certain kind of American catches a whiff of Canadian smoke over the rust belt and instantly credentials himself as a bonafide expert in managing a few million square miles of boreal wilderness he couldn’t find on a map. “Why can’t #Canada just put the fires out?” My brother in continental geography. We can’t put our own fires out… The US has thrown decades of eye-watering budgets at wildfire. We still lost Paradise in a morning and Lahaina in an afternoon. But by all means, keep posting to social media about those dastardly #Canadians. Canada is the second-largest country on earth, close to half of it forest, much of it with no roads and no way in. These fires move 20 to 30 kilometers a day. You can watch every acre burn from orbit in real time and still not lay a hose on it. In the future, maybe support climate science, conservation, and forestry if you want to breathe better. – at Detroit, MI
