“It reinforced a lot of things I already understood, but it also made me look at some of them differently.” This reader feedback captures what we hope Reconnect to Canada will do: deepen understanding of our rights and governing institutions, and encourage questions.

At the town level, people are realizing that elected officials campaigned as leaders, reality is most are good communicators and once elected their managers. Sit in any council meeting and its Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) that is running the show.

We are dealing with a lack of confidence in democracy itself. Leaders should inspire citizens—not manage them. If you want to better understand your country, strengthen your voice and participate with confidence, start with Reconnect to Canada: a.co/d/04b7hJzt

“Leaders should inspire citizens—not manage them.” - @empoweredca
Too many leaders speak to citizens as though they are a problem to be managed rather than people to be informed, respected and heard. That is backwards. Instead of fearing what citizens might say or choose, leaders should ask how they can better equip them to participate.

Is there anything more important than teaching our youth to think for themselves, know their rights, and understand how the institutions that govern them actually work?
As kids get ready to head back to school, is there anything more important than teaching them how the institutions that govern their lives work? We spend years teaching youth math, science, history and language, and rightly so. But they are also growing up to become citizens.

Maybe we should spend a little less time arguing about the outcome and a little more time asking whether the process is working as it should. Learn more in Reconnect to Canada: A Guide for Empowered Canadians on Amazon: a.co/d/0geqR1JD

Most Canadians participate in democracy by voting every few years. But democracy doesn’t end at the ballot box. Direct democracy gives citizens tools to participate directly in important public decisions through referendums, citizen initiatives, recall votes, and petitions.

A referendum is one of the most direct forms of democracy. It gives citizens the opportunity to vote directly on an important public question rather than leaving every decision solely to elected officials. The purpose of a referendum is not to divide people.

Our security and intelligence apparatus has decided there's nothing Canadians can do,outside of force, when they operate outside the law/commit crimes against Canadians. If you've ever litigated against them or pressed for accountability, you'll realize they are right!
Ultra vires one of the most important safeguards in a free and democratic society. Public institutions exist to exercise only the powers that the legislature has given them. Nothing more. The rule of law isn’t just for citizens. Public bodies must also stay within legal limits.

Bottom line: The harder you work and the more you put in, the more the system takes from you and gives to people who put in nothing. Equalization, EI, CPP, welfare, asylum and refugee supports — every one of them works the same way. The people who pull up their socks, work their asses off, pay taxes for decades, and actually contribute get the short end. The ones who contribute the least (or nothing at all) get the bigger transfers, the easier benefits, the longer support, and the faster access to services. Alberta and the other high-contribution provinces are treated like permanent cash cows. Seniors who worked 40–45 years watch newcomers and long-term non-workers collect more in handouts than they get after a lifetime of paying in. The formulas and rules keep expanding the payouts and the loopholes year after year. It’s not complicated. The system keeps rewarding the people who don’t put in the work and punishing the ones who do. A lot of us who still believe in work, responsibility, and contribution are done watching it.
Equalization is one of the most misunderstood parts of Canada’s federation. It is funded with taxpayer dollars collected by the federal government. But collecting taxpayers’ money does not give Ottawa a blank cheque to redistribute it however it chooses.
