When Iβm told I need to deliver a death notification, the weight of it hits me immediately. My chest tightens, my stomach sinks, and my heart skips a beat. I know Iβm about to share news that will change someoneβs life forever.
When I arrive at the home, I knock on the door and take a step back. I often see the family through a window, walking through their living room. They wave or smile at me, trying to greet me warmly. That moment is incredibly hard because I canβt smile backβI know Iβm about to bring them the darkest moment of their life.
When they open the door, they usually ask, βWhatβs wrong? What happened?β Thatβs when I begin by confirming their name and if Iβm at the correct address. Once I know Iβve got the right person, in the right place, I notice something Iβve seen many times beforeβthey start taking small steps back, almost fading away from me. I donβt think they even realize theyβre doing it. I think itβs their body trying to create distance from an unwelcome moment, knowing deep down that something devastating is about to be said.
Then, I deliver the most difficult words anyone could ever hear:
βItβs my sad responsibility to tell you that your son has died in a crash.β
βItβs my sad responsibility to tell you that your daughter has died in a crash.β
βItβs my sad responsibility to tell you that your mother has died in a crash.β
βItβs my sad responsibility to tell you that your father has died in a crash.β
In those moments, I often see one of three reactions:
1. They collapse. Some fall to the floor, crying in a way thatβs impossible to describe. I kneel beside them, and often, I cry with them.
2. They go silent. Others stand frozen, their faces blank as they try to process what Iβve said. Theyβre lost, unsure of how to move forward.
3. They push me away. Sometimes, Iβm told to leave or forcefully pushed back as they yell, βNo! Donβt say that!β But I stay because no one should face that moment alone.
These moments stay with me and the family involved.
Tonight is a night meant for celebrationβa time to welcome the new year, look forward to fresh opportunities, and start anew. It shouldnβt begin with tragedy and heartbreak.
Please make safe choices tonight. Donβt drink and drive. Use a designated driver. Protect yourself and your loved ones from the pain of ever having to face this kind of moment.
Be safe,
Trooper Ben

my mom didn't raise a quitter, she raised someone so afraid of failure that they don't even start something

Reaching the 30 week mark tomorrow is REALLY getting me in my feels. Iβm doing my birth classes and they suggest having hospital bags packed between 35-37 weeks and that being only 5 weeks away is likeβ¦ BRO WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW
Week 29 of pregnancy tried to break me. Iβm hopeful to be turning a corner but LORD, the excruciating pain I have been in has been more than I thought I could handle.
Watching a 6m baby kick and punch and wiggle around while feeling a 6m fetus doing the same thing inside me is a TRIP and a half.
