Last week, Autostraddle announced the elimination of Subject Editor positions. As a staff writer and longterm reader, I've been devastated by what's happening. When you believe in something, you fight for it to be the best it can be. That's what we'll do. bit.ly/ASwriters

This is exactly what's most frustrating to me: we didn't know that these writers received three months severance. We only know that this is connected to financial issues because of one tweet from Autostraddle's EIC and another from the managing editor's partner.

And I say all this as someone who works for a small, nonprofit media org. I understand that it's tough out here. I understand if they needed to lay off some people in order to keep going. But I want some clarity about whether that's happening, especially after the fundraiser.

The severance thing may or may not be accurate - the deleted tweet from a partner of an autostraddle staff member said they received severance, but I'm hearing elsewhere that they didn't

Hey @autostraddle, without an explanation/transparency about these layoffs, I'm taking my dollars elsewhere. These staffers wrote and edited some of Autostraddle's best pieces. Where is all that fundraiser money going?

so what’s the point of autostraddle (exceeding!) fundraising goals just for them to layoff their existing staff?

a great and important question that more folks should be asking in response to the very public “elimination” of 3 beloved Autostraddle staff editors — obviously indie media is on a budget, but… where is that budget going, if not to pay people?
Hey @autostraddle , why would you tell the community/your readers that donating will keep the site going if all you’re going to do is ax people anyway? Why should we ever donate to the site again? Especially when more money is raised than what is asked for?

If you're shitcanning your three most inclusive, radical editors in the middle of a national convulsion of insane homophobia and transphobia and racism, I think it's fair that readers start asking questions about where YOU stand.

some personal news: after almost a decade at autostraddle, my time there is coming to an end. the subject editor positions, including my role as community editor, have been eliminated and as of august 1 my contract is terminated. i am devastated, and looking for work immediately.

I’m gonna need @autostraddle to start explaining why they’re getting rid of these positions QUICKLY

Really saddened to hear that @autostraddle is ending contracts for some of their best writers and editors. I've turned to pieces written by Ro, Vanessa, and Shelli time and time again. As an A+ member, I want some transparency around what's going on at Autostraddle rn.
