EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS ARE OUR FIRST LINE OF DEFENCE AGAINST HEALTH EMERGENCIES.
A report of a patient with suspected Ebola waiting 18 hours in a hospital casualty area raises questions that go far beyond waiting times.
Emergency departments are essential health security infrastructure. We must design, equip, staff and support them accordingly.

Weβre strengthening Emergency Medical Care/Services, one facility at a time, powered by @emkefoundation
To save lives, emergency medical care needs a budget that keeps services running.
Today in Naivasha, EMKF brought together county health leaders, emergency medical care teams and partners for the County Leadership Emergency Care Conference 2026 to tackle a practical question raised by county governments:
How do we turn our Emergency Medical Care (EMC) policies into services that patients can rely on?
π¬ One key lesson from Day 1: the true cost of emergency care is often difficult to see in county budgets. Ambulance fuel, maintenance, staffing, equipment and other operating costs may sit across different budget lines, making it harder to identify what is funded and where the gaps are.
Through practical sessions and peer learning, county teams worked on costing their emergency medical care priorities, identifying funding gaps, using service data to make the case for investment, and strengthening emergency medical care within county budgets.
π€πΎ This builds on EMKFβs work with county governments to strengthen emergency healthcare services to save lives. Sustaining these services requires clear, adequate and predictable government financing.
For county teams, the benefit is practical: knowing what their emergency medical care priorities cost, where the funding gaps are, and how to make a stronger case for the resources needed to keep services running.
The work continues tomorrow.
