No debt. Perfect weight. 8 hours of sleep. Mental health in check. Clean diet. Zero alcohol. That was my prime era. I was 10.

African literature was blessed today by two births: 1556 - "Aḥmad Bābā al-Timbuktī, Berber writer of 40+ books and scholar from Mali, he was exiled from Timbuktu for opposing slavery. Today Timbuktu's only library is named for him. 1946 - Boubacar Boris Diop, Senegalese writer. His 2006 novel "Doomi Golo" is the only novel ever written in the Wolof language. His novel "Murambi: The Book of Bones," is a fictionalized account of the Rwandan genocide.

I went to Kiserian through Ngong town this week and was so shocked to see visible large tracts on Ngong hills where they’ve felled Ngong Forest trees. It’s so apparent and appalling to see. I have just seen that video of a guy talking about how they cut trees at night

Suddenly, forests across the country (Ngong Hills, Karura, Thogoto, Aberdares, etc) have all matured at the same time. What a coincidence.
CLARIFICATION ON FOREST PLANTATION HARVESTING IN NGONG HILLS FOREST The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has noted video clips and photographs circulating on social media alleging illegal logging in Ngong Hills Forest, with claims that the activities are being carried out at night. The Service wishes to clarify the circumstances surrounding the ongoing forest plantation harvesting operations. Harvesting of mature forest plantations in the Kibiku Forest Block of Ngong Hills Forest is being undertaken following a competitive bidding process and the subsequent award of a tender for the harvesting of 56 hectares of mature plantations, in accordance with the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act 2015, the Forest Conservation and Management Act 2026 (FCMA 2026), the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and forest harvesting rules (2016). Furthermore, forest operations are required to be conducted between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., as stipulated under the FCMA 2026. Upon completion of the harvesting process, the Community Forest Association is normally engaged to replant more trees through the Plantation Enterprise and Livelihood Improvement Scheme (PELIS). Regarding the photograph circulating on social media showing a trailer loaded with logs, the Service has received information that the vehicle had broken down and was undergoing repairs. KFS is verifying the circumstances surrounding the incident. The photograph alone does not establish that harvesting activities were taking place at night. The Service urges members of the public to seek clarification from the nearest KFS station on any concerns regarding forest management and harvesting activities. KFS urges the public to rely on verified information when commenting on the matter and to report all suspicious activities to the nearest police station for investigations or email info@kenyaforestservice.org

This Ebola sounds so clever. Besides identifying countries having elections soon, it turns out it is also a matchmaker.

Most of Nairobi’s municipal water comes from Ndakaini Dam (also called Thika Dam), located in Murang’a County in the Aberdare Ranges, roughly 50–80 km north of the city. This dam, completed in 1994, is the largest and primary source. It supplies about 80–84% of the city’s treated water (roughly 430,000 cubic meters per day). City dwellers should be worried about water supply in future if logging continues unchecked in the Aberdare Ranges.
