India's economic story must be judged not only by GDP headlines, stock-market celebrations or claims of global leadership, but also by what ordinary families experience at the grocery shop, in the job market and while paying their monthly EMIs. The latest figures deserve serious attention. FOOD INFLATION: 7.74%. ONION PRICE INFLATION: 108.09%. YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT: 15.9%. These are not opposition slogans. They reflect official inflation data and reported labour-market estimates for 2026. When food prices rise sharply, low-income households have little room to adjust. When young people struggle to find work, education can become a source of frustration rather than economic security. And when families are burdened by rising expenses, headline GDP growth alone cannot tell the whole story. The IMF's latest projections also put India's nominal GDP per capita below Bangladesh's for 2026. This is a reminder that the size of a country's total economy is not the same as the income or living standards of its individual citizens. To be fair, the IMF has raised India's growth forecast to 7% for 2026–27. But projected economic growth and household welfare are different measures. Both deserve scrutiny. THE REAL QUESTIONS ARE THESE: - Are wages and household incomes keeping pace with essential expenses? - Are young people finding secure, productive employment? - Are economic gains reaching ordinary families across rural and urban India? - What concrete measures will protect consumers from sudden food-price shocks? The government deserves to be judged by measurable outcomes, not merely by the scale of its promises. India's people do not need economic triumphalism in place of answers. They need affordable food, dignified employment, fair opportunities and confidence about their future. GDP GROWTH MATTERS. BUT GROWTH MUST TRANSLATE INTO BETTER LIVES. A headline cannot fill a plate. A slogan cannot pay an EMI. And a demographic advantage is meaningful only when young people can turn their potential into productive work. DEMAND EVIDENCE. DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY.
