West Bengal Fire Department Issues Notices to Three Durga Puja Committees Following Chorbagan Stampede.
Following the Chorbagan stampede incident, the West Bengal government constituted a high-level committee to review life and fire safety arrangements at Durga Puja pandals. The committee comprises:
1. Rajesh Kumar Singh – Principal Secretary, Disaster Management Department
2. Anuj Sharma – Director General, West Bengal Fire Services
3. Javed Shamim – DG West Bengal Special Task Force
The committee inspected several Puja pandals today, during which multiple safety lapses were detected.
Subsequently, the Divisional Fire Officer of the South Kolkata Division issued notices to three Puja committees, directing them to rectify the deficiencies immediately.
1. Ballygunge Cultural Association
• The lighting inside the Puja pandal was found to be extremely inadequate, potentially creating difficulties during an emergency.
• The organisers were directed to ensure adequate lighting and proper visibility immediately.
• Commercial activities have been prohibited at the entry and exit gates and in the immediate vicinity of the pandal.
Deadline: The organisers must rectify the deficiencies immediately and inform the local fire station by 7 PM.
1. Chetla Agrani Club
• Inadequate lighting was detected inside the pandal.
• The organisers were directed to install sufficient fans and air-conditioning to prevent suffocating conditions.
• Several temporary structures had been erected beside the pandal to house shops and commercial activities.
• The notice states that these activities violate Section 23A of the West Bengal Fire Services Act, 1950.
• LPG cylinders were reportedly being used in some shops, posing a significant fire risk given the highly inflammable materials used in the construction of the adjacent Puja pandal.
Deadline: The organisers have been directed to dismantle the unauthorised temporary structures immediately and inform the local fire station of compliance by 8 PM.
1. Tridhara Sammilani
• The interior of the Puja pandal was found to have been decorated with highly inflammable materials, raising concerns about the rapid spread of fire in the event of an incident.
• The organisers were directed to ensure the safety of all electrical installations and wiring to prevent any fire incident.
