Jon Gruden: “Tight Ends shouldn’t wear single digit numbers man. It’s downright soft. Imagine Rob Gronkowski wearing number 2? Tell you who looked good in number 2 was Derek Jeter. That was a cool guy man. Pull up the first pitch George Bush threw at the World Series.”

Somewhere in America
1) a kid is prepared to lie about these being stolen
2) a ref is eager to throw a flag for thinking they’re not being worn
3) a coach is losing his mind over both 1 & 2
4) the pad itself, at its current production size, is not saving a single knee

As an AD, I often think about how Nick Saban was able to win year after year, even with different coordinators and constant turnover. It was never just about talent. It was about having a standard, an expectation, and a system for how things were done every single day.
Everyone was replaceable. You either rose to the standard or you were removed from the process. That mindset can sound harsh in today’s world, but sustained excellence has always required accountability.
It really is simple in theory. Shut out the outside noise. Hold the line on expectations. Build habits that create consistency. Remove entitlement. Remove excuses. Remove anyone unwilling to be part of the pursuit of greatness.
Championship cultures are not built by keeping everyone comfortable. They are built by getting everyone aligned.

I will not lower the standard for your son. I will not play players who do not do what they have been coached to do. It will not get easier, your son will get tougher. & Yes i do have favorites, my favorites are the players who do what I ask them to do. #EFFORT

The thing is it’s usually not the football coaches that urge specialization. It’s the other sports that talk kids out of football to specialize in their sport.
Almost every football coach I know strongly encourages multi sport athletes.

When schools invest in football, they’re investing in culture. The accountability, leadership, and community buy‑in don’t just lift the team—they elevate academics, arts, and every other program. In a time when real community is fading, that shared identity matters more than ever
