#DRC: This story is incredible!
Here's my basic account from the @nytimes story.
1. It involves Turkish businessman Mert Mildon, who built the Kinshasa Financial Center (KFC) and is building the Kinshasa Arena and was supposed to rebuild N'djili Airport. Last month, Mildon married Trump's former personal lawyer, Alina Habba here in NYC. Mildon comes from a wealthy and politically connected family in Turkey who made their fortune in the auto sector (selling cars, renting cars, fixing cars, etc). @Presidence_RDC son attended the wedding.
(Note: @nskazadi told the @AssembleeNatRDC in 2023 the cost to build KFC was $290m. Reporting later discovered the #DRC govt paid Mildon $420m and then $120m from a bank loan to build KFC - a combined $540m)
2. It also involves Richard Grenell and Venezuela. Grenell is a long-time Trump campaign aide who advocated for better relations with Maduro's Venezuela. As in DRC, Mildon is trying to do business with the government of Venezuela. He used his relationship with the very controversial Colombian businessman, Alex Saab, to meet Grenell who introduced him to Venezuelan officials to secure construction deals. Saab was very close to Nicolas Maduro, former President of Venezuela.
3. Here's the basic story. A bank account in #DRC that is affiliated with @SuminwaJudith Government transferred nearly $18m to a Texas-based security firm. Mildon told the Times this was for services for his companies. Mildon and Habba also told the Times that $6m of these funds were meant to be donated to the @TKCOfficial - the performance hall in DC that is meant to be a memorial to former President JFK. This donation request came from Grenell.
But officials at the Center do not have a record of receiving these funds.
4. The @WhiteHouse told the Times they are investigating and that the $18m came from the bank account in #DRC that is affiliated by the #DRC Government.
5. The @WhiteHouse also told the Times something very troubling. Mildon's lawyer gave them bank information about the account- but the sender's name was blacked out (!!!!).
These are the basics of this emerging story at this hour.
(Full disclosure: I do not invest with Mildon or Milvest in DRC or any part of the world).
