A few thoughts on the announcement that the Jackdaw gas field development will go ahead 🧵
You'll hear claims today arguing we need Jackdaw for various reasons. Primarily some combination of energy security, perhaps cheaper bills and jobs. We should be sceptical of them.
Have now been waiting 2+ months for @EuropeanSlpr to pay a compensation for a Berlin>Paris sleeper that was cancelled last minute. Twice I've been promised payment and received nothing (only after 6 weeks of hassling. I'm owed hundreds of Euros.
The customer services representative has also suspiciously begun using the word 'refund' rather than 'compensation' - which was promised in the original communication from the company
Any advice on how to escalate this would be appreciated! Very little online on how to press for compensation from an EU company as a UK customer when it's not for a flight. @seatsixtyone maybe?

Where to even begin with these Labour briefings!
1) Louise Haigh is not working class.
I get that she has a Northern accent, but she is the privately educated daughter of a solicitor.
2) Blocking Ed Miliband from becoming Chancellor because of net zero during rolling heatwaves is a sign of abject political bankruptcy.
3) All of this indicates that Andy Burnham doesn't have any clear sense of what he wants to do with power.
We've seen that film before, and we know how it ends.
4) The fact that there is all this chaotic briefing and counter-briefing already is a very bad sign indeed.
It's itself a sign of a lack of central direction.
5) Shabana Mahmood as Chancellor just means the Treasury running economic policy, and the government sticking to the same agenda as before.
EXCLUSIVE with @ChaplainChloe
Louise Haigh, Andy Burnham’s top aide, advised him not to appoint Ed Miliband as chancellor, according to five people familiar with conversations in Burnham’s team.
Anneliese Midgley, another close Burnham adviser, was also opposed to Miliband as chancellor, say two of the people. The opposition from Burnham’s inner circle means Shabana Mahmood is now expected to get the job.
One Burnham ally suggests the extraordinary blow-up is because Haigh, Midgley and Burnham, while broadly on the Labour left, have different politics to Miliband because they are working class northerners with close trade union links and he is a London liberal who prioritises net zero and for that reason is politically risky. Several unions oppose Miliband as chancellor.
Haigh is the person standing in the way of “chaos with Ed Miliband,” a Burnham supporter says.
Burnham’s spokesperson rejects that characterisation of Haigh and Midgley’s views. They insist Burnham has still not made his decision.
The indications that Burnham is going for Mahmood over Miliband are already provoking a furious reaction from the Labour soft-left from which he derives much of his support.
People in that grouping say not appointing Miliband undermines Burnham’s promise of radical change and that Mahmood will make it much harder to win back votes from the Greens.
@Johnmcternan says “it would be insane” not to appoint Miliband as chancellor. “Do you want to run the treasury or do you want the treasury to run you? The choice is Ed Miliband or the treasury view.”

It's out of control, and there's no political leadership. Why isn't the Prime Minister speaking out against the twisted logic that blames people, entirely unconnected with the crime, solely based on the colour of their skin?

We also could not report that defendants were barred by the judge from speaking on their motivations for joining Palestine Action and providing information on the genocide in Gaza or Elbit Systems - before today.

I fear Labour people risk falling into an ecological fallacy visible from space when reacting to these results.
Here is what is very clear in the results: Labour are losing more *seats* to Reform, but... Labour are losing *votes* to the Greens

The logic "Reform won the seat from Lab therefore biggest vote swing is Lab to Reform" breaks down in fragmented politics. Multiple vote flows here: Lab to Grn, Lab to abstain, Lab to Ref, Con to Ref, abstain to Ref...Lab to Ref is only one part of this, and not the largest

The “Blue Labour” strategy still being promoted by some on Lab right is to try and win social cons while holding on to social liberals.
Failure state for this strategy is failing to win social cons while alienating social liberals.
Here is a map of that failure state:

And London is not unique in this regard.
Labour’s seat loss rate accelerated quickly back up to around 60% once Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield etc began declaring, having slowed down while early London results were coming in.

So far, Greens have won every seat they targeted in Sheffield.
Labour have not retained a single councillor - an absolute wipeout in a historic heartland.
