Sir Edmund chaired the defense of my PhD thesis in 1968. When I left Edinburgh for Canada his advice was “tackle a big problem.” Many believe he should have shared the 1937 Nobel Prize with Sir Norman Haworth for their work on the synthesis of Vitamin C. @EdinburghChem
