A generation ago, none of these taxes existed: no GST, no Land Transfer Tax, no Development Charges. The cost of owning a home has soared, and governments at all three levels have been a BIG part of that.
Think of this from an intergenerational perspective. Young people today cannot afford homes. This is impacting major life decisions, including starting a family.
There is lots for governments to fix to get more people into homes. The tax grab is a good place to start.
The magician redirects attention (as do some others).
With medical care, local and regional transportation, infrastructure, regional planning, poverty, education and housing policies in a shambles, ladies and gentlemen - let's talk about alcohol.

I'll post this after every time I almost get hit by a turning driver when I have the Walk.
Various columnists and BOC talking heads about lagging Canadian #productivity and throwing shade on both workers and lacklustre business “investment”. Nothing about the relative risk aversion in Cdn commercial lending and its lack of competitiveness relative to US.
housing policy - “Paris and Tokyo are densely populated but buildings are typically on a modest scale, often only six or so storeys. .exactly the kind of housing that cities such as Vancouver and Toronto specifically prohibit across much of civic land.”

I feel like I just witnessed a lynching.
Toronto City Council decided tonight to remove Henry Dundas's name from four locations in the city, starting with Yonge Dundas Square. Two subway stations with the name Dundas and a library will soon follow. Renaming all of Dundas Street is on hold, for now.
Mayor Olivia Chow rushed the motion onto today's agenda, without notice and contrary to Council Procedures, taking everyone except the insiders by surprise.
The low point of debate occurred when Mayor Chow uttered shockingly offensive lies about Henry Dundas, which appear to have had the desired effect. She was the last to speak. She accused Henry Dundas of promoting a plan to take African children to Europe and the US where they would be bred to produce more slaves for plantations. It was la la land stuff.
Another low point was when Councillor Mike Colle accused Henry Dundas of being the prime minister's henchman who forced Haitians to pay reparations to slave owners for the loss of their slaves. OMFG, I was speechless. It was the French who required reparations from Haitians, and they made their demands 14 years after Henry Dundas died.
After Chow and Colle spoke, councillors who moments earlier had spoken against the motion lost their nerve and reversed themselves.
Going into today's vote, we had 50% support on council, and believed it could go either way. The final vote was 17-4 in favour of renaming.
The process that led to this moment has a familiar ring:
-proclaim a wrongdoing,
-pick a convenient culprit,
-ignore evidence and due process,
-railroad the chosen culprit to a nearby hanging tree,
- When it's all over claim that it was all done in the cause of justice and celebrate the grand victory over evil.

Share if you think Minister Clark should resign immediately.
We need to hold this government accountable for their corruption on the Greenbelt.
Isn’t it time that we all recognized that government and its agencies are not able to manage much more than a backyard addition? #privatize #transit theglobeandmail.com/canada/t…
Toronto's 49% increase to development charges will decrease supply and increase rental and condo costs. Great work @TorontosMayor @TorontoCityCouncil

Even New York & Australia are done with lockdowns. @fordnation turned Ontario in to the most regressive state on the planet.
Lockdowns are deadly. They aren't the answer. On June 2nd we must #FireFord. #onpoli
