Identifying every single elephant in the Mara is an elephant-sized task.
Mara Elephant Project’s long-term monitoring (LTM) team is on a mission to identify and monitor every individual elephant in the Mara. If that sounds like a big task, that’s because it is!
Each day, the team searches for elephants they haven’t encountered before, like this adorable little calf, while also checking in on familiar faces. During this sighting, they identified two elephants already in our database: Individuals 43 and 49.
Getting to know individual elephants helps us track their movements, monitor changes in family groups and understand how the population changes over time. This long-term data is essential for identifying emerging threats and making informed decisions to protect elephants across the ecosystem.
Every elephant has a story, and our LTM team is working to make sure each one is known.

RIP Kawanthissa.
"Sri Lanka’s tallest living tusker, 'Kawanthissa', has died while receiving treatment for a gunshot wound at a paddy field in Galgamuwa."

Will the SOB who shot this majestic animal ever be brought to justice? Probably not.

A way out, guided from above.
Nine elephants, including several young calves, were trapped in a fenced area and needed a safe way out.
Mara Elephant Project’s ‘Delta’ ranger team used a thermal drone to track the herd’s movements in the darkness, guiding them through a gate and out of the fenced land.
This helped reduce the risk of property damage and injury to the elephants; just one example of how technology can strengthen ranger expertise and support safer human-elephant coexistence.
Fred is a symbol of all that is good. May he continue to bring joy to all who have the privilege to work and see him in the Mara. I have #Fond memories of #Fred ❤️
Fred is many things. A magnificent bull. A symbol of the Mara. A source of inspiration. Mara Elephant Project’s unofficial mascot and a reminder of why we do what we do.
To each of us, he means something a little different.
What does Fred mean to you? ❤️

One calf can offer a glimpse of hope for an entire species.
On this #BongoBonus, we’re sharing a hopeful sight from the Aberdares: a young mountain bongo calf captured on one of the Mountain Bongo Project’s camera traps!
With fewer than 100 mountain bongos believed to remain in the wild, every single calf brings us hope. These sightings provide valuable insight into reproduction and help the Mountain Bongo Project and its partners monitor Kenya’s remaining wild population.
Mara Elephant Project is proud to support the Mountain Bongo Project’s work to protect these critically endangered animals through monitoring, ranger patrols and habitat protection.
Together, we can help secure a future for mountain bongos in the wild.
On October 9th, our joint campaign with World Elephant Day, ‘Give Wildlife Crime The Severity That It Deserves,’ officially closed its letter-writing drive.

Secure a Future for Elephants.
Elephants deserve a future free of threats. Habitat loss, poaching and human-elephant conflict put their lives at risk. The solution is to deploy local rangers trained to leverage technology that protects elephants.
But that’s only possible if you and your herd of friends and family get involved.
Start a fundraiser to support Mara Elephant Project today and help us provide a solution for elephants before it’s too late.
Your generosity is inspiring.
Whether celebrating a major milestone or raising awareness, you can lead the herd and help Mara Elephant Project secure a future for elephants.

Good. Guilty Verdict in a Decade-Long Rhino Poaching case.
SANParks Welcomes Guilty Verdict In A Decade-Long Rhino Poaching Case
South African National Parks (SANParks) welcomes the guilty verdict against former Kruger National Park Regional Ranger, Rodney Landela, and former State Veterinary Service Animal Health Technician, Kenneth Mochocho, who were found guilty of the illegal hunting and killing of a white rhino in a protected area, as well as possession of a firearm with the intent to commit a crime.
The judgement brings closure to a matter that has been before the courts for approximately ten years and represents a significant victory in the fight against wildlife crime and the protection of South Africa’s natural heritage: shorturl.at/koMDm

Imagine a landscape where elephants and people coexist.
Bull elephants can travel long distances, especially when searching for mates. Sometimes, that means crossing farmland or other developed areas as they move through the landscape. When this happens, Mara Elephant Project rapidly responds by deploying a drone to safely guide them out of the fenced area.
But what if they didn’t have to navigate fences and boundaries in the first place?
At our coexistence farm, MEP has discovered five crops that elephants don’t like to eat and planted them in patterns with wide, open pathways for them to cross.
No fences. No boundaries. Just space for elephants to move through while farmers grow crops that support their livelihoods.
By finding ways to accommodate both elephant movements and the needs of farming communities, we can create a landscape where elephants can roam, people can farm, and both can thrive.
