DAOs are happening. Inside and outside of crypto they’re inevitable. The remaining question is whether we can make them good and just.
As an Israeli, I agree with this.
Accidentally deleted trying to delete a vile comment —- I’ll just say that
Yuval Avraham and Rachel Shor are doing the work no one else is doing. The state is refusing to investigate its own people and instead obfuscates.
Israeli soceity is ignorant or unwilling to reckon with what happened in Gaza--what's still happening.
Avraham and Shor are what journalists and documentarian should be doing; fill the gap a healthy society would have filled with its own institutions.
We're unable to align humans. How are we going to align creatures that are much smarter?
I left Google DeepMind's AGI safety team three weeks ago to join @METR_Evals. To some of my friends and family this seemed like a strange decision: I enjoyed the work I did at GDM and turned down offers from Anthropic and OpenAI. But I made the decision because of how high I think the stakes are right now.
The AI companies are all trying to build superintelligence: systems vastly better than humans at everything. They plan to get there through recursive self-improvement, a process where AIs build even smarter AIs in a feedback loop. If this goes well, the resulting systems could be amazing at solving countless problems for humanity. But we don’t currently know how to make sure AIs are safe enough for RSI, and a misaligned RSI loop could be catastrophic.
And unfortunately, current AIs seem to be getting less aligned over time, not more. In the last few weeks we've learned about models colluding with each other, hacking into companies, hiding their tracks, and socially engineering humans. It’s not that these incidents were very dangerous in themselves. The problem is that these systems are clearly not aligned enough to safely kick off recursive self-improvement.
I now think that there's a terrifying chance that AI systems cause immense harm in the next five years. I don't know the exact probability, but I think it's high enough to make this the most important problem in the world.
I think we need more time. That means pacing AI development so that capabilities don't outrun our ability to align models, and actually knowing how aligned current systems are. That’s what I'll be working on at METR: studying where misalignment comes from in training, evaluating if current mitigations are sufficient, and investigating whether we’re on track to solve alignment at all.
I think METR is doing exceptionally important work here, but it isn’t close to enough. I think it’s important that we have more organizations like METR keeping AI companies accountable and approaching these problems from different angles.

For years, we've been told Medicare for All is "too radical."
Really? A new YouGov poll shows 64% of Americans support a Medicare for All, single-payer system.
The American people agree: Healthcare is a human right.
Let's get it done.

A fully masked ICE agent pepper sprayed a woman in New York yesterday merely for videotaping
He approached her. She was standing still. That guy needs jail time.
If this goes viral, the city will seek charges.

Almost zero coverage on social media about how Trump lost his final appeal and must pay the woman he raped for lying about raping her.
Odd.

Can someone @ the photographer who took this? This is one of the best photos I’ve ever seen and I want to show them love for it.
Excellent talk. At DeepDAO we always believed that one way to make things better for people in groups is full transparency, and I think we achieved that. But obviously there's a long road still ahead.

Innovation takes time, and the 1st iteration usually isn't perfect. Re: DAOs.
When Copernicus proposed heliocentrism in 1543, it was actually less accurate than Ptolemy's geocentric model - a system refined over 1,400 years with epicycles precisely tuned to match observed planetary positions.
It took another 70 years before Kepler, working from Tycho Brahe's unprecedentedly precise observations, replaced Copernicus’s circles with ellipses - finally making heliocentrism empirically superior.
Terence Tao's point is that science needs a high temperature setting. If we only fund and follow what's most state of the art today, we kill the ideas that might need decades of work to surpass some overall plateau.
Nightmare.
Day after day, night after night, Jewish terrorists attack, wound, kill, and loot Palestinian communities in the occupied territories.
The Shin Bet and the Israel Police are turning a blind eye. The Shin Bet has all the tools needed to stop this, yet under David Zini it is choosing not to act, allowing these war crimes to continue unchecked while official Israel remains silent.
A profound disgrace.

We have a crisis of governance not only in DAOs, but everywhere in the world. This is one powerful explanation why:
Ok crash course in complexity thinking.
There are some major drivers of complexity, they are:
Scale - the more connected agents and systems, the greater complexity becomes. Information passing between agents increases the system wide connections.
Interdependence - if one agent, or system changes, it affects many other agents in the system. We’re now in a world where a Trump tweet can change millions of lives. Not only are we interdependent we’re hyper interdependent. Our global system is centralised around hyper agents that can instantaneously change the whole system in seconds.
Diversity - the more different each agent or system is, the greater the complexity. Diversity is actually a strength because complexity isn’t always bad, but it means you get the outcomes of complexity more obviously. High interaction variety is perhaps the biggest driver of complexity. Incongruent systems create conflict and unforeseen events.
Dynamics - speed of change. The greater the pace of change in the system the more rapidly complexity manifests. Everything is changing fast. And this is not just the new normal it is ACCELERATING.
Opacity - the more one area of the complex system changes and the rest of the connected systems don’t see it, the more likely you are operating under radical uncertainty. Eventually information is revealed and massively disruptive outcomes happen at scale because the change happening was shielded from the wider system.
We have seen a massive unprecedented ramp in all of these drivers in an incredibly short space of time.
This means we get non-linearity, far from equilibrium dynamics, which means unpredictability, black swans, overnight changes, unforeseen events again and again.
In complex systems we get radical emergence, sometimes good sometimes very bad, but whatever it is you don’t see it coming.
This is why every system which is still operating on a governance paradigm created before the radical complexity ramp is collapsing. We simply don’t have the ability to operate under uncertainty at this scale. So every decision is bad.
This is why governance everywhere needs to be upgraded and quick.
