I so resonate with this. Lately, I've been finding a sense of support and alignment of these two needs in communities of others with a similar long-view mindset, making plans and pulling together. Nix has definitely been giving… sunbeam.city/@edrex/10809882…
Ok, I'm joining mastodon again, since so many of the communities I'm interested in are here. For the past few years I've been pretty much Matrix/Signal only, and I need to practice living publicly, without being a corporate serf.

I need to figure out how to get the crossposter to link back to Mastodon somehow. I am @edrex@sunbeam.city
Testing host OSes and container runtimes for edge devices. Ruled out #k3s (👆idle CPU usage), #armbian (stale host pkgs). Docker-compose seems solid, and a host OS based on either @AlpineLinux or @yoctoproject. About to test @balena_io, wary of lockin. Any experiences?

Their cloud platform for pushing delta updates and monitoring nodes and services seems like a big accelerator. My use-case doesn't generate enough revenue to pay for their platform when scaled up tho.

Turbulence is everywhere, but it is one of the least understood phenomena in classical physics. Now, researchers may have identified a fundamental mechanism by which turbulence develops by smashing vortex rings head-on into each other buff.ly/388p3bb

speedrunning single-node #k3s cluster setup on armhf (#hardmode). Even at tiny scale this kind of setup is worthwhile since it automates so much. I'll likely migrate my #libresh v1 (docker-compose nodes) once this is proved out #infrainahurry

now that I have a single node cluster with my armv7 Odroid HC1, I'm going to add a spare RPi3 (poor io but pretty good compute) and as soon as I get around to swapping the dead mobo for ebay part, a beefy dell Xeon workstation. 3 nodes, 3 microarchitectures :D

this should work fine as long as I'm careful to use multiarch images, or use k8s affinity to keep arch-specific pods on the right nodes.
setting up a highly automated web app hosting cluster on whatever hardware you have lying around your house is super easy these days. If you have been dipping your toes in the #homelab waters, I would encourage you to jump in :)
