I've spent this week in Manchester with @ProfArleneHH (left) training these wonderful prison educators to teach Aristotle's recipes for becoming the best and happiest version of yourself. So unbelievably rewarding. Thanks, Alice, Suzanne, Zoe, Caroline, Rebecca and Jilly!

Théodore Chassériau was born 20/9/1819. Many of his paintings use classical heroines simply to allow gawping at naked mammary glands, but I do like his patriotic illustrations of Vercingetorix's (unsuccessful) rising against Julius Caesar better known through "Asterix the Gaul"

What's so good about the great vase-painter Amasis' depiction of Athena (with Poseidon and Hermes before their competition) is the massive owl STARING STRAIGHT AT YOU from her shield. Don't forget she's wiser than the sea-god. Athenian, now in Louvre.

We're spoilt for classical choice on Anselm Feurbach's birthday (12/9/1829).This dark landscape inspired ch. 3 of my new book Medea: A Life, when she must flee, with her nurse & Jason, from the Mt Pelion coast of Thessaly after boiling Pelias. They had to hire a new amateur crew.

John Soane, son of a humble bricklayer, born 10/09/1753, rose to become a top architect. His wonderful 'Tivoli Corner' at the Bank of England (1805/6, left), inspired by the Tivoli Temple of Vesta (bottom right), was wrecked when its top level was removed in 1833 (top right-now).

It's apparently #InternationalWineBoxDay. Personally, boxes never seem to provide the quality provided by bottles. If it's volume you want, try an amphora, which can be creatively be used for other purposes once you've glugged the lot.

On #InternationalDayofCleanAirforBlueSkies, here's Karl Friedrich Schinkel's "Ouranos and the Dance of the Stars" (1834). I love the little twinkly head-dresses and general revelry. He was more famous as an architect and stage designer, and this is distinctly theatrical
