I love the Olympics. Winter, summer, every single games, I tune in. I love it because we see how sports bring us together. I love it because we are reminded that sports are the ultimate equalizer. Look at weightlifting in the summer Olympics or downhill skiing now. The weights and the mountain don’t care what country you come from, how much money you have, or what religion you are. The weights and the mountain are the same for every single competitor. I love it, most of all, because the Olympics remind us of a core life lesson: greatness and heartbreak live right next door to each other. You can’t find greatness without a few meetings with heartbreak and failure. We saw this very clearly over the weekend. Like many of you, I’ve been following my friend Lindsey Vonn’s inspirational comeback. She’s 41, one knee is completely rebuilt, and now she went into the Olympics with a freshly-torn ACL. As storylines go, you can’t get any better. It is gutsy. It is brave. It is a little bit crazy. And it brings out all of the losers to do their naysaying. “Why would she do this?”  ”She must be missing something in her life.” “It’s irresponsible.” What these people don’t understand, because they’ve never tried anything great, because they’ve never pushed themselves to the absolute edges of their limits, because they’ll never know their real potential, is that there is no such thing as risk-free greatness. Yesterday, when her Olympic dreams ended in that horrible crash that left all of us praying for her in front of our televisions, the haters were out in full force. I don’t need to repeat it. Twitter has given losers enough of a platform; I won’t be amplifying them in this newsletter. (1/x)

I wonder how many Americans who consider themselves politically aware could pass a civics test about how our government is supposed to function. I wonder how many Americans who ostensibly talk about politics as part of how they make a living could. Our anti-education/anti-knowledge culture has come for our constitutional society. And people who consider themselves "patriotic" celebrate dismantling the very aspects of our Framer's work that those exquisite-minded guys were most proud of. Co-equal branches of govt and checks and balances. Not bugs...but this system's greatest features. We are a politically hypocritical society and this will cost us. Can you imagine if the Biden/Harris/Hillary Clinton crowd were doing and saying the sort of things Trump is saying now? How many of you Trump fans would be ready to take to the streets? "That's what the 2d Amendment is for Dan"...how many times have I been told that by the "defenders of our Constitution"? For 40 years you've been saying it to me! So...it's only a problem if THEY'RE doing it? One side gets a pass at assaulting the constitutional wall that protects us all, and the other doesn't? How many of you would say "they're only joking" or "don't worry, it's a negotiation position" if Kamala Harris said these things? Serious question. You'd be just fine with it? No big deal? And I'm sure the right-wing talker's ecosystem would be too? All of this is going to come back to bite us. All of it. We are shortsighted, propagandized, political hypocrites. And we simply refuse to apply the same standards to both sides. And while I'm ranting: half of this problem is the fault of the Democratic Party. I've never seen such a toothless, feckless, directionless, passion-free group of poor political candidates in my life (and I was of voting age in the Mondale/Dukakis years). Only their most radical wing shows any passion or life at all...and that's the group that absolutely, positively can't win a general election. When the great historian in the sky writes about this era the "other party" in a two-party system deserves a ton of the blame too. Everyone over 70 years old in that party should resign right now. What Trump is trying to do in our system now is exactly what the Founders designed safeguards to prevent. And that's why Trump is targeting the safeguards.

“This city council body has no role in international affairs,” Mayor Aaron Brockett said last night. This took a year?
After nearly a year of contentious public comment periods at Boulder City Council — dominated by protesters demanding council endorse a Gaza ceasefire resolution and increasingly marked by personal attacks — the mayor & several councilmembers took a stand. boulderreportinglab.org/2024…

While as a father I certainly understand President @JoeBiden’s natural desire to help his son by pardoning him, I am disappointed that he put his family ahead of the country. This is a bad precedent that could be abused by later Presidents and will sadly tarnish his reputation. When you become President, your role is Pater familias of the nation. Hunter brought the legal trouble he faced on himself, and one can sympathize with his struggles while also acknowledging that no one is above the law, not a President and not a President’s son.

Bill was my best friend. He was an amazing person, singular, irreplaceable, giving, loving. He called himself the luckiest man in the world but it was us who were lucky—to know him. There are things you can replace. And others you cannot. Bon voyage, old friend, I love you.

That's strange, it usually gets dark from east to west. Temperature dropped a couple of degrees too. Hmmm.

Asking for a definition of threat hunting is one of my favorite interview questions. I get some very interesting answers.
Since #ThreatHunting is so cool, everybody wants to be called/seen as a threat hunter. That's why we have so many definitions contradicting each other. The same goes for detection engineering.

Growing up in a Michigan trailer park, William Apostol learned to play guitar from his stepfather, and briefly played heavy metal. Today, as @BillyStrings , the Grammy-winner has been dubbed the "future of bluegrass." cbsn.ws/3fSOx5Y
