Scientists are accustomed to gradual change. But for a large part of Wally Broecker's career — based on paleoclimate evidence — he was obsessed with the idea of abrupt climate change that arrives suddenly and dramatically. Looks like Wally was right. doi.org/10.1038/328123a0

The @IEA has published five dedicated pages tracking progress on #CarbonManagement. So, are we on track? #CCUS Momentum has grown substantially in recent years, with over 500 projects in various stages of development across the CCUS value chain. Since January 2022, project developers have announced ambitions for around 50 new capture facilities to be operating by 2030, capturing around 125 Mt CO2 per year. Nevertheless, even at such a level, CCUS deployment would remain substantially below (around a third) the around 1.2 Gt CO2 per year that is required in the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario. 𝗖𝗢𝟮 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 More than 370 Mt CO2 of new annual storage capacity has been announced since January 2022, with similar capacities for connecting infrastructure. Based on the existing project pipeline, dedicated CO2 storage capacity could reach over 420 Mt CO2/yr by 2030, causing the balance between dedicated CO2 storage supply and the planned demand based on capture capacities for 2030 to level globally. However, this is insufficient to meet the around 1 200 Mt CO2/yr by 2030 called for in the Net Zero Emissions Scenario. #CCU Around 230 Mt of CO2 is currently used each year (~130 Mt in the fertilizer industry and ~80 Mt for EOR). New utilisation pathways in the production of CO2-based synthetic fuels, chemicals, and building aggregates are gaining momentum. The current project pipeline shows that around 10 Mt of CO2 per year could be captured for these new uses by 2030, including around 7 Mt CO2 in synthetic fuel production. If all announced projects are commissioned, they could reach around half the level of CO2 utilisation for synthetic fuel production by 2030 envisaged in the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario. All CO2 would need to come from air or biogenic sources (only the case for 4Mt by 2030 for now). #BECCS Plans for around 20 facilities together capturing around 15 Mt CO2 per year of biogenic emissions have been announced since January 2022. Based on projects currently in the early and advanced stages of deployment, removals from BECCS could reach just under 50 Mt CO2/yr by 2030, which falls far short of the approximately 190 Mt CO2/yr by 2030 in the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario. Targeted support for carbon dioxide removal (#CDR), and BECCS in particular, will be required to translate recent momentum into operational capacity. #DAC 27 DAC plants have been commissioned to date worldwide, capturing almost 0.01 Mt CO2/year. Plans for at least 130 DAC facilities are now at various stages of development. If all were to advance, DAC deployment would reach the level required in 2030 under the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario, or around 75 MtCO2/year. -- The five pages are part of the Tracking Clean Energy Progress 2023 report. We're seeing more of the effects of global temperature rise every day. Most of us can feel deep in our bones that transformational change is needed, and science has made abundantly clear what it must entail. We have to protect 1.5°C as the maximum temperature increase.

The scientific consensus for #ClimateChange and that is is caused by human activities is 96-100%. People think it's just 60-70% of climate scientists, because bots and climate change deniers flood social media and newspapers with false data, lies and fossil fuel propaganda.

❗ What a delightful visit ❗ @JustinTrudeau certainly put us on the spot asking excellent in-depth questions on technology, value chains and the different delivery models offered by Carbfix. Agreed on potential in closer collaboration between 🇨🇦 and 🇮🇸 in carbon management.
Thrilled to welcome Canadian @JustinTrudeau & @katrinjak to Carbfix. Their visit highlighted our potential in #Canada & the growing global interest in our CO2 mineralisation tech. Let's continue working together for a sustainable future. 🇮🇸🇨🇦 lnkd.in/eq3rUbss

Before heading home from Iceland, I stopped by @Carbfix – an Icelandic company that turns CO₂ into stone. As we work to build a clean economy and fight climate change back home, we’ll keep working with – and learning from – experts like these from around the world.

The oil & gas industry had a record cash windfall in 2022 due to high fuel prices But most of this has gone to dividends, share buybacks & debt repayment, rather than into energy investments. Only a small fraction has been spent on clean technologies 👉 iea.li/3J9rlft

OK, #carbonremoval community. It's time to get drafting and submitting. Deadline: 24 May. I've made your life easier with my blog post, where I outline what, why and how: evetamme.com/2023/05/21/chal… A massive reaction now will indicate that something is wrong. A lack of reaction will indicate everything is fine. Let's do it! #article6
