I was an otaku in school in the 2010s and literally only me and one other nerdy chick listened to Kpop (and J+Cpop) at all and we were made fun of for it 😭 I fell out of the scene and then seeing what it mutated into was wild.

I'm old enough to remember when k-pop was seen as "otaku adjacent" in the same way lolita and j-rock fandom was. Up until like 2017, I rarely heard k-pop music or saw any merch outside of an anime convention.
