SAY IT ONE MORE TIME FOR THE PEOPLE NOT PAYING ATTENTION!!
Parents, your son's head coach gets calls from college coaches during the season When that call comes, the college coach is not asking about stats He is asking what kind of kid your son is. How he handles adversity. Whether the team respects him. If he shows up every day or just on game nights. That phone call can open a door or close one

Some of the most important teaching happens when a student is ready to give up on themselves. Maybe they've failed another test, stopped turning in assignments, or decided they're just not good at a particular subject. A teacher can make a difference in those moments by refusing to let one difficult stretch define what comes next. That might mean sitting down to figure out where the student is getting stuck, giving them another opportunity to demonstrate what they've learned, or following up after a difficult conversation instead of pretending it never happened. The academic work still matters. Students need to learn the material, meet expectations, and take responsibility for their progress. But years later, they may also remember the teacher who kept helping them find a way forward when they were ready to quit.

Many parents will say they want a coach who holds their child accountable… Until the coach holds some of their children accountable. Then we need a meeting, two administrators, game film, witness statements, and possibly congressional oversight.

Baylor football is wearing a six-year-old's artwork on their helmets today. Her name is ILaria Ramirez. She is from Cameron, Texas. She is a patient at Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's Medical Center. Here is how it happened. Baylor players went over to the children's hospital and sat down with the pediatric patients. Not a photo op, not a walk through and wave. They actually sat down at tables with the kids and drew together. Blank Baylor Bear heads. Markers. Make it yours. ILaria made hers pink and teal. She put a bear right in the middle of it. And then she did two things that nobody told her to do. She gave it a name. She called it the Helmet of Hope. And she picked three words to go around the edge of it. FAITH. VICTORY. STRENGTH. A six-year-old chose those. Not a marketing department. Not a coach. Not her parents. Her. Baylor took her drawing, turned it into a decal, and put it on every single helmet for today's Gold Rush game against Louisiana Tech. Not a sticker on one guy's helmet. Not a patch on the sleeve. Every player on the field wearing a first grader's bear on the side of their head. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and gold is the color for it worldwide. Baylor asked the entire stadium to wear gold today. Head coach Dave Aranda on why: "ILaria is one of us, and so we represent her and want her and her family to know that we're fighting along with her." And linebacker Kyler Jordan, on what today actually is: "Way bigger than football." Here is the number that sits underneath all of this. Nearly 1 in 285 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer before they turn 20. One in 285. Before 20 years old. Which means in a stadium that holds 45,000 people, the math says a few hundred of them have already been through some version of what ILaria is going through right now. That is why the gold matters. That is why a helmet decal matters. Somewhere in that building today there is a kid who knows exactly what a hospital room looks like, watching a Division I football team run out of the tunnel wearing a drawing made by a girl who is six. FAITH. VICTORY. STRENGTH. She picked those words herself.

Urban Meyer believes people should stop claiming they want to reach their dreams when their daily habits say otherwise “I always like to say, you’re here, and you want to get there. The fastest way is draw that straight line and stay away from anything that pulls you off of that straight line.” “There’s a great quote actually right over there that says, ‘Do your habits reflect your dreams and goals? And if not, then change.’” “When I had my son, I changed that quote. My son has it up in his bedroom right next to his bed: ‘If your habits don’t reflect your dreams and goals, change your habits, or change your dreams and goals.’ Don’t lie to yourself.” “I hear people say, ‘I want to go play in the NFL,’ but you’re acting like this. Don’t lie. You lie to me, it’s fine. But don’t lie to yourself.” “Then you’ve got to look in the mirror and say, ‘Do I really want to be a first-round draft pick and I’m doing this?’ That’s when usually it hits home.”

One of the biggest mistakes players make on August 1 phone calls... When the college coach asks: "Do you have any questions for me?" The player responds: "No, I think I'm good." That may seem harmless, but it can leave the wrong impression. You don't need to ask questions just for the sake of asking them, but having zero questions can make it seem like you haven't researched the program, aren't very engaged, or aren't taking the recruiting process seriously. Remember... This isn't just the coach evaluating you. You're evaluating them too. Every phone call is an opportunity to learn whether that program is the right fit for you. Some great questions to ask include: • What do you see as my biggest area for improvement? • What does your recruiting timeline look like? • What are the next steps after this conversation? • What does player development mean? How would you help me develop? You don't need a list of 20 questions. Just have 3–5 thoughtful ones ready before every call. It shows you're prepared, genuinely interested, and thinking beyond simply getting an offer. A college coach isn't just recruiting your talent. They're recruiting the person they'll be around every day for the next four years.... Or 1.

We keep blaming teachers for declining literacy. But we're raising a generation that consumes information through 15-second videos, endless scrolling, and constant notifications. Then we assess them as though they've spent years building the reading stamina to sit with a complex text for 30 or 60 minutes. Scrolling is a sprint. Reading is a marathon. Today's students interact with language differently than any generation before them. They skim. They swipe. They jump from one idea to the next. Yet our literacy assessments still require sustained attention, deep comprehension, inference, vocabulary, and the ability to remain engaged with complex texts. Those are essential skills. They always will be. But if children spend far less time reading books outside of school than previous generations, why are we surprised when reading stamina declines? This isn't about blaming parents or lowering expectations. It's about recognizing a profound cultural shift. Schools are increasingly being asked to develop skills that many children have fewer opportunities to practice beyond the classroom. Teachers matter. Instruction matters. But literacy has never begun with a standardized test. It begins with hearing stories, seeing adults read, turning pages, asking questions, imagining new worlds, and discovering that some things are worth staying with long after the first page. If we want stronger readers, we can't place the entire burden on teachers. Building literacy has always been, and will always be, a shared responsibility between schools, families, and the culture our children grow up in.

The biggest takeaway from this world cup is how much our politicians have pitted us against each other through propaganda. It’s a much different thing when you meet face to face.
