NEW: 🇨🇦 Jewish military members take legal action after nearly 30 claims rejected by @Deloitte under a $150-million federal class-action discrimination settlement. Part 2 of my @TheCJN investigation into this troubling story: examines the court challenge by a Toronto chaplain, Capt. Rabbi Jonathan Jaffit, and features a firsthand account from a 2nd serving ✡️ member. Will @CanadianForces intervene, reverse rejections for Jews not being "racial" enough? Btw also French-Canadians rejected. youtu.be/o5EGL_eByfA
BREAKING: At least 2 dozen Jewish Canadian Armed Forces members + veterans say they’ve been rejected from a $150-million Federal Court approved class-action settlement meant to address historic and current racial discrimination in the @CanadianForces. Why were the claims denied by @Deloitte, the administrator? Now there's legal action coming. My latest for @TheCJN: thecjn.ca/news/jewish-canadi…
On the 3rd anniversary of #Oct7 @TheCJN takes you inside Calgary’s new Garden of Remembrance. The historic Jewish Erlton Cemetery has a new memorial sculpture "Shattered Into Light" installed alongside the graves of generations of Calgary Jews. Already, visitors are leaving stones at its base, an ancient mourners' tradition. Watch the full interview, hear the story on "North Star". thecjn.ca/news/canadas-first…
"This is where these ideas begin." 2 weeks after the Yom Kippur shooting at Belleville’s synagogue, antisemitic flyers were found at the synagogue + nearby lawns. @TrentUniversity Holocaust expert Prof. Karen Blair found strikingly similar flyers in Peterborough in 2023 from the GDL. She explains why these flyers should not be dismissed as “just flyers” and how the now-dead synagogue shooter's beliefs about Jews should have triggered his friends to report it. @TheCJN "North Star" show. shrlnk.ca/s/QnDfd0a2

Israel’s Supreme Court hears appeals today over the disqualification of Arab opposition parties, candidates in the Oct. 27 Knesset election. If they are allowed back, what does that mean for the Prime Minister Benjamin @netanyahu's re-election chances? Prof. @CsabaNikolenyi from @Concordia University's Azrieli Institute for Israel Studies @AIISconcordia joins @thecjn "North Star" podcast to explain what's at stake.

“You are going to die for the Jews.” @BLVLPolice chief says the now-dead Belleville synagogue shooter said this, before opening fire at the officer on duty outside the synagogue on Yom Kippur. Now, calls are growing for armed security, increased police presence at Jewish institutions across Canada. We speak w/ @YSzlak of @FederationCJA in 🇨🇦's 2nd-biggest Jewish community: Montreal. @thecjn thecjn.ca/news/jewish-leader…
#Belleville shooting update: Media conference 2 p.m by @BLVLPolice following Sunday night's shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue on Yom Kippur. While we wait for today's update, here is how Canada's grateful Jewish community has responded with $500k+ so far to support the wounded police officer. New @thecjn interview w/ Rabbi Oded Peles who was inside the synagogue, also w/ fundraiser @DerekKreindler

Rabbi Oded Peles was late starting the Yom Kippur service in #2Belleville, Ont., Sept. 20, because he paused to help 2 congregants light candles outside the sanctuary. Seconds later, a hail of 23 bullets tore into the stained-glass windows beside the pulpit at Sons of Jacob synagogue, where Rabbi Peles would have been standing. Hear what happened in the gun attack, and where the rabbi took inspiration to continue praying, singing and holding hands with shaken members. He tells @TheCJN why he flew to Italy the next day to ask @officialvatican Catholic leaders to stand against #jewhatred.

Breaking: #Belleville #synagogue #shooting. Ontario's Solicitor General @TeamKerzner is en route to the city this morning to meet with local police, with the mayor, @NeilREllis and synagogue members, he tells @thecjn. Meanwhile, this worshipper who survived says he warned the city something like this was going to happen. That story on: youtu.be/NsAPPsIuOzI

A shooting outside a Belleville synagogue during Yom Kippur services left a police officer critically injured Sunday night, while worshippers inside took cover.
“It definitely would have been a massacre,” synagogue member Douglas Lobel said.

“They must deliver soon.” Former Cdn #antisemitism envoy Amb @DeborahLyonsSE says Canada’s new Advisory Council tasked with fight hate, with antisemitism as priority #1, has an “absolute obligation to deliver”. She came out of retirement this week to call for concrete results "before Hanukkah". Lyons calls on Canadians to hold the council accountable. Same goes for Prime Minister Mark Carney. @marcmiller scrapped her office on Feb. 4 and replaced it with the council. Lyons' comments came at a Toronto conference on antisemitism and democracy. 🎥 “Boycotts are not the solution.” @IsraelinToronto's new consul general to Toronto and Western Canada, @ZysblatNadav says calls to boycott Israel and Israeli businesses are damaging also to Canadian interests — and he makes the case for stronger Canada-Israel trade, not less. We spoke right before Canada announced ban on products from Jewish #WestBank settlements. Watch the full interview with me @thecjn.

Israel’s newly-arrived consul general to Toronto & Western Canada says he wants more trade with Canada, not less. @ZysblatNadav says Israel could help diversify Canada’s economy, even while current relations are strained politically since Oct. 7. Last week Canada joined the U.K. and France to ban imports of West Bank Israeli settlement products. In his debut interview, Zysblat said boycotts are not the solution, and hurt Canada's interests. Our talk was recorded 2 days before Canada's announcement, but his remarks are now particularly relevant because he was making the case for more trade and economic ties between Canada and Israel, at precisely the moment that relationship is facing new pressure.

🎥 Why is Canada’s largest synagogue building a new massive security fence? Just before Rosh Hashanah, @BethTzedec Congregation in Toronto is fencing the front and sides of its perimeter, the 1st time in its 70-year history it has felt the need to do so due to rising antisemitism. Experts advised it could help minimize potential shooting attacks from the street + keep unauthorized people out. For @TheCJN "North Star" podcast, I spoke with Senior Rabbi Steven Wernick @rebsteve about the fence: "people are going to be shocked", the rising costs of keeping Canadian Jews safe and the changing experience of going to shul. New Israeli Oct. 7 film "Our Loves" premieres this weekend @ the Toronto International Film Festival @TIFF_NET amid calls by anti-Israel activists for boycott. But director Avi Nesher, who's been at TIFF 5 times (but not in nearly a decade) says he still views the 🇨🇦 festival as non-political unlike Berlin @Festival_Cannes & @la_Biennale. I spoke with Nesher about recreating the Nova festival, filming in Be’eri, making fiction from real survivor experiences, grief, and why he says his film is about hope: “Israel needs hope.” @TheCJN "North Star": thecjn.ca/arts-culture/new-i…

Our @thecjn story about MAID and Toronto’s Orthodox rabbis is sparking a lot of feedback and discussion in the Jewish community. Watch 📽️ our latest YouTube video for "North Star", looking at the growing debate over how the Jewish community should respond when someone chooses MAID.
Toronto’s Orthodox Rabbinical Council says its rabbis will not officiate at funerals for people who receive MAID >burial plots in its synagogue cemetery sections will be refused. But we speak with Rabbi Jennifer Gorman of the Toronto Board of Rabbis, and Rabbi Reuben Poupko of Montreal offer a very different perspective — they both oppose MAID, but explain what Jewish law teaches about compassion, stigma, and obligations to care for families. Watch the show, then share your thoughts. The Vaad HaRabbanim declined to be interviewed on camera, but their position is in the print version of the story: link in show notes.

Toronto’s Orthodox Rabbinical Council, the Vaad HaRabbanim, has declared that its rabbis will not officiate at funerals for people who receive #MAID and burial plots in their synagogues' cemetery sections will be refused. The policy has sparked a debate among prominent Toronto and Canadian rabbis - who also oppose MAID – over the right approach to respond to Jewish MAID patients and their grieving families. Montreal’s agglomeration council unanimously adopted a resolution Thursday condemning antisemitism & for the first time listing nearly 3 years of hate crimes vs local Jews, urging public-safety personnel to be trained to recognize, prevent, respond to antisemitism.
It comes just days after @mtlville council passed a significantly-softened motion on Israel/Palestinians: without "genocide", "apartheid" or a boycott. On my @thecjn's new "North Star" video with @bnaibrithcanada's @PaolaSamuel, hear her explain why Jewish groups call the outcome “a win.” ▶️ Watch: youtu.be/Z7PX4hqlLLU
