1 Love is the only thing the proud will ever refuse. 1.2 But only because it is they who are turned away. 1.3 Blocked from every kindness, the proud only believe they are above kindness. 1.4 Blocked from every goodness, the proud only believe they are above goodness.
1.5 But love is above all desires, and yet we want. 1.6 Love is beyond all numbers, and yet we count. 1.7 Love is above all annoyance, and yet we groan.
1.8 Enjoy your frustrations.
1.9 Despise your desires.
1.10 Most desires are unworthy of you. 1.11 But love will annoy even you who are unworthy of it. 1.12 To only follow your desires is to not see anything as it is. 1.13 As a ghost, you will never grasp things as they are.
1.14 We can only follow our desires to our death, having never really lived.
1.15 Desire is poverty.
1.16 Every purchase is the receipt. 1.17 I only desire to know why I desire. 1.18 In that sense, I am impoverished.
1.19 But when I turn away from my desires, my desires appear. 1.20 In that sense, I am not impoverished. 1.21 To have it, give it up. 1.22 To love it, let it go. 1.23 To learn it, forget all you know.
1.24 He who hates his work hates his time off. 1.25 Love your frustrations, it is the only joy. 1.26 Love them anyway, it is how the way is prepared for you. 1.27 Love your frustrations more than anything, for there your happiness is born.
1.28 Undistracted by your desires, you will live happily, you will work effortlessly, you will speak purposefully. 1.29 Undistracted by the false, you are closer to the truth.
1.30 Undistracted by desire, you are closer to peace. 1.31 No longer fluent in death, you will bring joy to life. 1.32 No longer fluent in death, you will confuse the dead.
1.33 Love cuts all things like butter. 1.34 This knowledge is greater than all magic. 1.35 Do not believe in problems.
1.36 Hate not the obstacle.
1.37 Reject all subtle hatred. 1.38 Do not believe what is ignorantly justified.
1.39 But all obstacles will be removed if you are strong enough to love them instead.
1.40 Everywhere you go, your problems follow you.
1.41 Where the hiker walks, his mountain appears.
1.42 Though he escapes far into the city his mountain will follow in the shape of the city.
1.43 Everything we hate we are unable to love, we are unworthy to love, we have been blocked from loving. 1.44 We hear what we are worthy to hear. 1.45 We reject what we are unworthy to accept. 1.46 A man does not deserve to love the things he hates. 1.47 But the pure of heart can see and know of beauty beyond this life.
1.48 Do not desire thanks, be thankful. 1.49 Do not desire kindness, be kind. 1.50 Do not look for signs in heaven.
1.51 Be you the sign on earth.
1.52 Do not stop rowing your boat to see your neighbor’s ship. 1.53 Row your boat and let there be ships. 1.54 If you do complain, do something worth complaining. 1.55 Row.
2 Love is a miracle disguised as my chores. 2.2 Love is the accent, and the sorrow, of my soul. 2.3 Love that desires reward desires neither the love nor the reward. 2.4 Calloused hands soften the heart. 2.5 But a man who loves anything is so gentle with everything.
2.6 Nothing works as they say, only as they are. 2.7 Nothing is as we think, only as it is. 2.8 We do not deserve to understand such a thing if distracted by our own opinion. 2.9 And so only the ignorant learn.
2.10 Breathe hatred and die. 2.11 Drown in love and live. 2.12 Compared to the true, subtle opposites are the same. 2.13 To true love, subtle love and hatred are the same.
2.14 To true desire, subtle desire and non-desire are the same. 2.15 Remove the subtle from your heart and mind, and all that is true comes to you.
2.16 The aphile who does not believe in true love laughs at me. 2.17 But he loves to laugh. 2.18 Behold the power of love. 2.19 For the one who is pushed to the margins is the one true love has no choice but to touch.
2.20 The opposite of love is not to hate, but saying so and doing nothing, saying so and expecting anything, saying so and forgetting you have said it. 2.21 The opposite of love is not to hate but to forget you loved.
2.22 Some experiences are rain. 2.23 Others you grow as wheat from the rain. 2.24But the heart full of desire cannot love, and the mind full of desire cannot see. 2.25When it rains on our heads, the ones who love the dew love you too. 2.26 But the ones who hate poverty hate abundance. 2.27 So hate nothing. 2.28 For we are hateful only to what we want to love.
2.29 You cannot love and hate at the same time. 2.30 Even when they are opposite things. 2.31 To love anything is to love everything. 2.32 To hate anything is to hate everything. 2.33 He who cannot see the beauty in the ugly can only see the ugly in the beautiful. 2.34 Man’s vengeance is theft; for the cup of wrath cannot pour out love even to itself.
2.35 The gates of heaven are in hell. 2.36 To hate what hates you is to hate what loves you. 2.37 And to love what hates you is to love what loves you.
2.38 To return hatred with hatred is the only slavery.
2.39 To return hatred with hatred is the only death.
2.40 Love shamefully, we are ashamed either way. 2.41 Love as a hypocrite, there is no other sincerity. 2.42 Love without a good reason, we never need one. 2.43 Love the least of us to be the best of us.
2.44 Love is what provides, listens, communicates, manages, resolves, and conquers. 2.45 The hateful are simply incapable of anything but destruction.
2.46 Be sensible and throw your own sense of things away. 2.47 Be reasonable and reject your own reasoning of things. 2.48 Win the argument by speaking the least and improving the most. 2.49 Lose your fight to win your soul.
3 Pride is humiliation. 3.2 Anger is punishment. 3.3 But we always pretend to be prouder and angrier than we are.
3.4 He who blocks your path is the brother of your way.
3.5 What belongs to you returns to you. 3.6 When your way is blocked a better one is being prepared for you. 3.7 But patience is vengeance.
3.8 Anger is betrayal. 3.9 Even anger at betrayal is only another betrayal. 3.10 For there are many kinds of infidelity but only one kind of faithfulness.
3.11 The unfaithful hate betrayal the most, the faithful hate betrayal the least. 3.12The angry hate correction. 3.13 And the hateful take everything the wrong way. 3.14But to love anything is to see it again for the first time.
3.15 Anger idolizes death. 3.16 Anger at idolatry is the idolatry of anger. 3.17 The more anything angers such people, the more they should hear it, and the less we should tell them. 3.18 Let the birds mock them. 3.19 If anything offends such a man, let the grass offend him so he doesn’t trample over you instead.
3.20 A teacher takes a student far, but no farther than he.
3.21 The student taking the longest to learn often learns the most. 3.22 Be immersed in everything you do.
3.23 Evil amounts to nothing. 3.24 Evil admits this and says, “all is nothing.” 3.25But evil depends on the good it hates.
3.26 Force is a weakness.
3.27 The stronger the grip the more vulnerable it is for arrest. 3.28 We only fear losing what we know we don’t deserve to have. 3.29 We only demand from others what we know is only missing in ourselves.
3.30 Arrogance in its tiny forms is forgiven graciously. 3.31 But the smaller the fleas, the more we need to be convinced they are the cause of all our pain. 3.32 But consensus is error. 3.33 The truth, to many, is whatever seems best to repeat to others.
3.34 Opinion’s thoughtlessness. 3.35 Complaining’s unfairness. 3.36 He who decries unfairness the most loves fairness the least. 3.37 Build up instead of complaints and opinions, the empty altar of your hearts. 3.38 The light will come down to it, and then you will see. 3.39 But can the light reach the depths of the miserable heart?
3.40 What is is. 3.41 And what is not is not. 3.42 But what is not is the only thing that can come to be. 3.43 Whatever you want is already in your heart.
3.44 Hold what you desire in your heart firmly, and gently, and it may find its way into your life, if it is worth anything. 3.45 When it comes, hold it gently. 3.46 When it goes, let it go.
3.47 Man is born blind and stays blind until he loves something more than himself. 3.48 Such a virginal heart can only see itself, can only hate itself, can only want to do what is most convenient for itself.
3.49 A heart blind to its own set path cannot stand to see its own destruction but can only move towards it. 3.50 But a man who rejects what is evil when it is inconvenient for him steps off the wheels of death.
4 Shameless selflessness.
4.2 Gratuitous gratitude.
4.3 Crushing kindness.
4.4 These three things prove your immortality.
4.5 For to go beyond the nature of your constitution proves you are beyond the state you are contained.
4.6 Happiness is the pleasure of excellence because excellence is the most proper state of your soul. 4.7 Divorce proves divinity because soullessness acclimates to the needs of the body, but divorce comes because of the needs of the soul. 4.8 Such things are easy to see for minds that deserve to see them.
4.9 Love is the emptying of yourself. 4.10 The hateful want and want but can never be loved. 4.11 For we are not what we have, know, believe, or do, but only how we misuse them all.
4.12 The opposite of excellence is arrogance. 4.13 Of ownership, possessiveness. 4.14Of value, blindness to value.
4.15 Be great and admire the small. 4.16 Look for value where it is not easy to find.
4.17 Worship the ground by walking. 4.18 The air by breathing. 4.19 The world by eating. 4.20 Love’s unfair for you because love is God.
4.21 Mockery is closer to worship than hatred, yet they mock. 4.22 Desire is closer to hatred than satisfaction, yet they want. 4.23 Ignorance is closer to truth than opinion, yet they fight. 4.24 To love everyone who deserves it, love everyone who does not. 4.25 To hate no one wrongly, hate no one rightly.
4.26 Give shamelessly. 4.27 Shamefully. 4.28 Give with no regard to shame. 4.29 Forgive shamelessly. 4.30 Shamefully. 4.31 Preforgive them, and do not be ashamed.
4.32 Give them your ear and throw yourself away. 4.33 Lend them your hand and throw yourself away. 4.34 To love yourself throw yourself away. 4.35 Do not enter the next life sadly through the grave but happily through the landfill.
4.36 Wealth is service. 4.37 To be needed cannot be taken from you. 4.38 Nothing can take it. 4.39 Nothing. 4.40 And do not pity the sick who go to heaven. 4.41 But pity the hateful already in hell.
4.42 Do not keep track of your sacrifices. 4.43 They can keep track of themselves. 4.44 For grief is the mother of all happiness. 4.45 And joy is the son of grief. 4.46And every tear is accounted for. 4.47 To love the son, love his mother. 4.48 Or you love neither of them. 4.49 Or anything else.
5 How can a man profit from theft or meanness? 5.2 For to improve is the only profit and one cannot improve through injustice. 5.3 If justice had no eyes on us there would only be rubble. 5.4 But I hold up the shards of this broken world to show you I am not in pain. 5.5 And justice lives.
5.6 Pride’s a prison. 5.7 The ungrateful heart is always in pain. 5.8 But love is the enamel of the heart. 5.9 To empty yourself is to love yourself and be released. 5.10 A man desires nothing more than to be released from the prison of his pride by gentle kindness.
5.11 But he who desires honey is always followed by swarms of bees. 5.12 But I say that he who follows the bees of this life, though he is stung, always has life and honey in him. 5.13 So do not even pray for honey. 5.14 But be as bees.
5.15 Love stitched you together. 5.16 Why then do you always feel so betrayed? 5.17 Is not love worth more than gold? 5.18 Why then do you care how he acts? 5.19 Or how he speaks? 5.20 Or what she says?
5.21 A drop of love is worth more than many mean words. 5.22 Truly, I say: more than a pound of heaven is the worth of a drop of love. 5.23 So do not then have a goldmine and then worry about an anthill.
5.24 Evil tempts, but the divine attracts. 5.25 This is the tug and pull of the cosmos of your life. 5.26 So when your wife criticizes you, thank her for going through the trouble. 5.27 And if she takes your friend to dinner, pay them to go a second time. 5.28 And she, your wife, will run to you.
5.29 You either love them both or you love neither of them. 5.30 For he who hates one because he loves the other hates both. 5.31 Love cannot be divided. 5.32 There is only one God.
5.33 Marvel always at all things. 5.34 Divinity is yours. 5.35 Why be ashamed of doing what is good for the sake of the dust that hates you? 5.36 Let the dust rustle under your feet as you tread over it by doing kind things. 5.37 Marvel at what compels you to be kind. 5.38 And be kind. 5.39 Even to them that hate you be kind.
5.40 Do not grow forgetful.
5.41 Angry. 5.42 Spiteful.
5.43 Bitter. 5.44 Or proud.
5.45 Never ignore what you once prayed to have. 5.46 The first obstacle to have her was her. 5.47 The last obstacle is you. 5.48 And do not grow angry with her because you know so much. 5.49 If you know so much, know not to be so angry.
6 I am the ground.
6.2 Come and step on me.
6.3 But once I grab the heel of your mind, I never let go. 6.4 Every thought you had has always existed. 6.5 Before the foundation of the world, you laughed with your entire soul.
6.6 You see things and remember your friends. 6.7 But when you think of them, many think of you.
6.8 Everything follows in the direction you take it. 6.9 The whole world follows you like the mosquito follows the blood in your veins.
6.10 Every recitation inspires what it recites because inspiration flows in both directions. 6.11 Every act inspires its memory because actions form in both directions.
6.12 Every soul influences the formation of its prayers, and every prayer influences the formation of its soul because souls are formed in both directions.
6.13 Everything carries eternity. 6.14 History is always in front of you. 6.15 He who hates any moment hates every moment. 6.16 He who hates any man hates every man. 6.17 He who hates the ugly hates the beautiful. 6.18 He who hates his enemy hates his friend.
6.19 Every day may be the prison of the past, but it is the prince of tomorrow. 6.20 Every presence interferes with the substance of its meaning.
6.21 And every meaning interferes with the life of its substance. 6.22 For the image always reminds us of the man more than the man reminds us of himself.
6.23 Every love endures the suffering it does not desire.
6.24 But every desire deserves the suffering it does not endure.
6.25 Everywhere you place evil you make as if worthy of death. 6.26 Everywhere you place what is good you make as if worthy of life. 6.27 But evil turns away from the good and runs to die.
6.28 Every time you are considerate, let go of being polite. 6.29 Every time you are polite, let go of being considerate. 6.30 The polite leave when a man begins to consider. 6.31 To the polite, speak politely. 6.32 To the considerate, speak the truth.
6.33 Everything you are, you seek, for it seeks you. 6.34 And as you seek it, it will be shown to you. 6.35 What you are, you hear. 6.36 And as you are, it will be said to you.
6.37 Throw yourself away, and everything will be given to you. 6.38 Be kind. 6.39 And kindness will follow you like a dog follows her owner.

7 Be glad when you don’t have your way. 7.2 Otherwise, you desire the way of another and are a thief.
7.3 Be glad about lots of waste. 7.4 Otherwise, your neighbor becomes unsatisfied and steals.
7.5 Be glad when you find the good in your enemy. 7.6 For the sake of your friend.
7.7 Pray not for the needy. 7.8 But to be needed.
7.9 Consider not only what is clean or kosher. 7.10 It is neither kosher nor clean.
7.11 But honor your exes as your second parents so that you may live.
7.12 If you gave them your heart, let them break it. 7.13 If they warmed your heart, let them burn it.

7.14 Do not burden another

7.15 But love their ingratitude, for that is gratitude.
7.16 And love their unkindness, for that is kindness.
7.17 Surrender to the impossible. 7.18 For you are not the lord of what is possible.
7.19 And love Him who is your God above all things. 7.20 For that is heaven.

8 Mastery finds the novice. 8.2 And the novice finds the master. 8.3 This knowledge is greater than all schooling.
8.4 But worry is carelessness. 8.5 Anxiety, thoughtlessness. 8.6 Passion, indifference. 8.7 Reverence, hatred. 8.8 And desire, disgust. 8.9 For how we feel is only to convince us we care about the things we do not.
8.10 But what we care about without worrying, what we think about without anxiety, what we are concerned about without passion, revere without hatred, and desire without feeling, that we are.
8.11 Teach the hungry. 8.12 Do not feed them. 8.13 Give him his bakery, not bread from yours. 8.14 For a man thinks with his hands and thanks with his own. 8.15 It is thoughtless to consider yourself thoughtful.
8.16 The thoughtful know they are as if thoughtless. 8.17 The good know they are good insofar as they let goodness happen when they throw themselves away.
8.18 The thief owns less than nothing for he will pay what he owes. 8.19 The tyrant controls less than nothing, for the drunk are powerless. 8.20 To hate is worse than to die, for you suffer in this life and the next. 8.21 To worry about nothing, worry about everything. 8.22 And to lose a mountain, be stingy with a pebble.
8.23 Be glad when she complains. 8.24 A weak complaint proves there is nothing else wrong. 8.25 And a strong complaint improves you.
8.26 But the more admirable you become, the less you can be admired. 8.27 The purer your heart, the less anyone can see it. 8.28 The greater the work, the less anyone can praise it. 8.29 The more you do, the more will be asked of you. 8.30 But whatever is asked of you gives you the power to do it.
8.31 To be unworthy of anything always feels like being better than it. 8.32 For heavy is the broom in the unworthy hand. 8.33 But mine is my staff that comforts me. 8.34 Transfigures me. 8.35 Saves me.

9 A marital problem is the hot water for the tea of your souls. 9.2 Let it bring out the good in you all along.
9.3 Pray for her to be unfair.
9.4 The more unfair they are, the better you will understand fairness. 9.5 What a beautiful and wonderful thing it is to contemplate fairness. 9.6 It is worth every unfairness.
9.7 Your wife is a book. 9.8 An open book. 9.9 She hates having to teach you what you should already know. 9.10 But I say that the man who doesn’t put down this book to listen to his wife is a man who hates having to learn. 9.11 And he is unworthy of this book.
9.12 What she doesn’t enjoy, sell. 9.13 What she hates, give away. 9.14 Whatever she doesn’t like in you, like in her. 9.15 Whatever she disrespects in you, respect in her. 9.16 For every excuse you give her, allow her seven. 9.17 For every lie you speak, allow her thousands.
9.18 The more pathetic the excuse for them, the more you love them, and the more your love harms them. 9.19 To love them, throw your own sense of love away. 9.20 For even the unfaithful have faith that they love the beautiful.
9.21 But the unfaithful desire beauty at the expense of what is beautiful. 9.22 So I say, only God loves. 9.23 And we love insofar as we allow God to love.
9.24 If you love them, throw your own sense of love away. 9.25 Do not be amazed by the rotten milk of your breast. 9.26 But let them have the love of heaven.
9.27 Turn away from praise and worthless things. 9.28 To throw yourself away is the only love with birth pains because it is the only kind which gives life to the one you love.
9.29 When you see misdeeds, look for the divine moving there. 9.30 Divinity is in every pit of every fruit of evil. 9.31 But when you see a great man fight for fairness, see unfairness moving there. 9.32 For unfairness is in every step in the pursuit of fairness.
9.33 And therefore, I say to you that we escape nothing. 9.34 We are closer to justice than the air. 9.35 We do not escape our blessings. 9.36 Nor our punishments. 9.37 So accept both. 9.38 The only poverty is to be unworthy to accept this.
9.39 Do not scheme. 9.40 Do not complain. 9.41 Do not worry. 9.42 Do not fear. 9.43 Row the boat you have. 9.44 You end up in the same place either way.
9.45 However you desire to be treated, treat each other better. 9.46 And even more, love them anyway.
9.47 Preforgive her, and find her sins against you adorable, so that you may be adorable in the eyes of heaven.
9.48 For she is the most beautiful. 9.49 But love her anyway.

BN
7.14 Do not burden another
with what you yourself cannot bear.

3.30 Arrogance in its tiny forms is forgiven graciously. 3.31 But the smaller the fleas, the more we need to be convinced they are the cause of all our pain. 3.32 But consensus is error. 3.33 The truth, to many, is whatever seems best to repeat to others.

8.10 But what we care about without worrying, what we think about without anxiety, what we are concerned about without passion, revere without hatred, and desire without feeling, that we are.

8.23 Be glad when she complains. 8.24 A weak complaint proves there is nothing else wrong. 8.25 And a strong complaint improves you.

Bella Novena 2.22 Some experiences are rain.

4.14 Of value, blindness to value.
5.19 Or how she speaks? 5.20 Or what she says?
5.21 A drop of love is worth more than many mean words. 5.22 Truly, I say: more than a pound of heaven is the worth of a drop of love. 5.23 So do not then have a goldmine and then worry about an anthill.
5.24 Evil tempts, but the divine attracts. 5.25 This is the tug and pull of the cosmos of your soul. 5.26 So when your wife criticizes you, thank her for going through the trouble. 5.27 And if she takes your friend to dinner pay them to go a second time.
7.14 Do not burden another with what you yourself cannot bear.
8.4 But to worry is carelessness. 8.5 Anxiety, thoughtlessness. 8.6 Passion, indifference.
8.7 Reverence, hatred.
8.8 Desire, disgust.
8.9 For how we feel is only to convince us we care about the things we do not.
8.10 But what we care about without worrying, what we think about without anxiety, what we are concerned about without passion, revere without hatred, and desire without feeling, that we do.
9.14 Whatever she doesn’t like of you, like of her. 9.15 Whatever she disrespects of you, respect in her.
9.44 You end up at the same place either way.
9.45 How you desire to be treated, treat each other better. 9.46 And even more, love them anyway. 9.47 Preforgive them, and find their sins against you adorable, so that you may be adorable in the eyes of heaven. 9.48 She is the most beautiful. 9.49 But love her anyway.
BELLA NOVENA
1 To love is the only way the proud will refuse to walk. 1:2 Blocked from every good thing, the proud only believe they refuse them. 1:3 But love is above all desires, and yet we want.
1:4 Love is beyond all numbers, and yet we count. 1:5 Love is above all annoyance, and yet we groan.
1:6 Enjoy your frustrations. 1:7 Despise your desires. 1:8 Most are unworthy of us. 1:9 But love annoys us even when we are unworthy of it. 1:10 He who only follows his desires does not see anything else. 1:11 He sees through everything as a ghost who cannot grasp anything as it is.
1:12 Desire is poverty. 1:13 The purchase is our receipt. 1:14 I only desire to know why I desire. 1:15 In that sense, I am impoverished. 1:16 But when I turn away from my desires, my desires appear. 1:17 In that sense, I am not impoverished. 1:18 To have it, give it up. 1:19 To love it, let it go. 1:20 To learn this, forget everything you know.
1:21 He who cannot love his vocation cannot love his vacations. 1:22 Love your frustrations; it is the only joy. 1:23 Love them anyway, it is how the way is preparing for you. 1:24 Love your frustrations more than anything, for from there your happiness is born.
1:25 Undistracted by desires, you will function effortlessly, happily, powerfully. 1:26 Undistracted by the false, you are closer to the truth. 1:27 Undistracted by desires, you are closer to peace. 1:28 No longer fluent in death, you will bring joy to life. 1:29 No longer fluent in death, you will confuse the dead.
1:30 Love cuts through all things like butter. 1:31 This knowledge is greater than all magic. 1:32 Do not believe in problems. 1:33 Hate not the obstacles placed in front of you.
1:34 Who do you think put them there? 1:35 And from where did they come? 1:36 Reject all subtle hatred. 1:37 It is only ignorantly justified by all men. 1:38 Every obstacle will remove itself from you if you are strong enough to love it.
1:39 Everywhere you go, your problems follow you. 1:40 Where the hiker walks, his mountain appears. 1:41 Though he escapes far into the city, his mountain will follow him there, in the shape of the city.
1:42 We hear what we are worthy to hear. 1:43 We reject what we are unworthy to accept. 1:44 Everything we hate, we are only unable to love, unworthy to love, have been blocked from loving. 1:45 A man does not deserve to love the things he hates. 1:46 He only deserves to hate them. 1:47 But the pure of heart can see clearly what many consider a mystery.
1:48 Do not desire thanks, be thankful. 1:49 Do not desire kindness, be kind. 1:50 Do not look for signs in heaven. 1:51 Be you the sign on earth. 1:52 Do not stop rowing your boat to look at the size of your neighbor’s ship. 1:53 Row your boat. 1:54 And let there be ships. 1:55 If you will complain either way, do something worth complaining. 1:56 Row. 1:57 Nothing works as we think. 1:58 Only as it is. 1:59 If we do not think, nothing works. 1:60 If we only pretend to think, no one thinks. 1:61 We cannot learn this if distracted by opinion. 1:62 And so only the ignorant learn. 1:63 But all the good we desire we already have.
2 Love is a miracle disguised as my chores. 2:2 Love is the accent, and the sorrow, of my soul. 2:3 Love that desires reward does not love the reward, cannot love you, cannot love itself. 2:4 A calloused hand softens the heart. 2:5 The man who loves anything is so gentle with everything. 2:6 So hate not the hated nor the beloved. 2:7 Compared to the true, the subtle are all the same. 2:8 To true love, subtle love and hatred are the same. 2:9 To true desire, subtle desire and disgust are the same. 2:10 To remove the passionless hatred in your heart, contemplate it; perform some small humiliation, some over-gratitude, and fully hate me.
2:11 Love is not possible! 2:12 And yet it happened in my heart one day. 2:13 Such is preposterous! 2:14 As opposed to what? 2:15 They are dangerous! 2:16 As opposed to who? 2:17 What if you’re harmed! 2:18 As opposed to when? 2:19 Be obsessed with love and live. 2:20 Dabble in hatred and die. 2:21 But the ones pushed to the very margins are the ones God has no choice but to touch.
2:22 The a-philewho does not believe in true love laughs at me. 2:23 But he loves to laugh. 2:24 Behold, the power of love. 2:25 Whenever you feel someone hates you it’s you who hates them. 2:26 Whenever you feel someone loves you it’s you who is receptive of it. 2:27 The unseeing heart can only see itself. 2:28 Some experiences are rain; others you grow as wheat from the rain. 2:29 Love fully, don’t pretend. 2:30 Agape or hatred; there is no other deed. 2:31 No other opinion. 2:32 No other.
2:33 We are offended by the things we only pretend to love. 2:34 We are hateful to the things we only want to love. 2:35 We are reverent to what we would prefer to hate. 2:36 But what we would hate under some circumstance we hate already in our heart. 2:37 And what we would love under some circumstance we already love. 2:38 The opposite of love is not to hate but saying so and doing nothing, expecting anything, preferring anything, forgetting anything. 2:39 The opposite of love is not in the darkness of hate, but to take pleasure in the obscurity.
2:40 The cup filled with wrath cannot pour out love. 2:41 To swallow your vengeance and live is the only life. 2:42 He who cannot see the beauty in the ugly can only see the ugly in the beautiful.
2:43 But the gates of heaven are in hell. 2:44 To hate what hates you is to hate what loves you. 2:45 And to love what hates you is to love what loves you. 2:46 To return hatred with hatred is the only slavery. 2:47 To return hatred with hatred is the only death. 2:48 We cannot love and hate at the same time. 2:49 Nor can we hate the one for the sake of the other. 2:50 So love shamefully. 2:51 You will be shameful either way. 2:52 Love as a hypocrite. 2:53 It is the only sincerity. 2:54 Love without a good reason as you never needed one for anything else. 2:55 Love the least of us for the rest of us to be among the best of us.
2:56 Love is what provides, and what satisfies, what manages, and what conquers. 2:57 Nothing else. 2:58 Love is listening. 2:59 Love is in the heart of all things. 2:60 Love is a man. 2:61 To love Him, hate me, and throw your own sense of things away. 2:62 Win the argument by speaking the least but improving the most. 2:63 Lose your fight to win your soul.
3 Pride is a humiliation. 3:2 Anger, its own punishment. 3:3 We always pretend to be angrier than we are. 3:4 He who blocks your path is the brother of your way. 3:5 When your way is blocked a better one is being prepared for you. 3:6 The way is coming, if you will only wait.
3:7 Anger is betrayal. 3:8 Even anger at betrayal is another betrayal. 3:9 For there are many kinds of infidelity but only one kind of thoughtful faithfulness. 3:10 Many kinds of lukewarmness but only one kind of faithful thoughtfulness. 3:11 But the dead take everything the wrong way. 3:12 For to love something is to see it for the first time.
3:13 Anger idolizes death. 3:14 Even anger at idolatry is the idolatry of anger. 3:15 The more anything angers such a person, the more they should hear it, and the less we should tell them. 3:16 Let the birds mock such people. 3:17 The more anything offends such a person, the more they should be offended, but let the grass offend them so they don’t trample over you instead. 3:18 A teacher takes a student far, but no farther than the teacher. 3:19 The student that takes longest to learn is learning the most. 3:20 Be immersed and you never need to plan or gather. 3:21 Be innocent and you never need to defend. 3:22 Remember yourself and you’ll never be offended when anyone forgets.
3:23 Force is a weakness. 3:24 The stronger the grip the more vulnerable it is for arrest. 3:25 We only fear losing what we know we don’t have. 3:26 We only demand from others what we know is missing from ourselves.
3:27 Arrogance in its tiny forms is forgiven easily. 3:28 But the smaller the fleas, the more we need to be convinced they are the cause of all our pain. 3:29 Consensus is error. 3:30 The truth, to many, is whatever seems best to repeat to others. 3:31 Thoughtlessness is believing only what immediately makes sense.
3:32 Complaining is unfairness. 3:33 He who considers unfairness the most loves fairness the least. 3:34 Build up instead the altar of your hearts. 3:35 The light of fairness will come into it. 3:36 Can the light of fairness reach the depths of the miserable, complaining heart?
3:37 What is, is and what is not, is not.
3:38 What is not is the only thing that can come to be. 3:39 Whatever you want, the best sight of it is already in your heart. 3:40 To want is to love, and to love is to see. 3:41 So love everything through thorough contemplation. 3:42 Hold everything with extremely gentle kindness. 3:43 Thank everyone and be overly gracious. 3:44 A part of what you want is always in your hand. 3:45All of what you want is already in your heart.
3:46 The virgin heart can only see itself. 3:47 It only mocks itself. 3:48 Only hates itself. 3:49 Blind to itself, it cannot see its own hatred. 3:50 Feel its own evil. 3:51 It only hears its own evil echoes. 3:52 Attack yourself and you will beg for enemies. 3:53 Fighter, if you love yourself enough to fight, then first fight yourself.
4 Shameless selflessness. 4:2 Gratuitous gratitude. 4:3 Crushing kindness. 4:4 All three of these prove our immortality. 4:5 For to go beyond the nature of our constitution proves we are beyond the state we are contained.
4:6 Happiness is the pleasure of excellence. 4:7 Because excellence is the most proper state of the soul. 4:8 The soul is easy to see for eyes that deserve to see it. 4:9 And for the mind that deserves to know it. 4:10 For when you prepare yourself for the way, the way also prepares itself for you. 4:11 Love empties itself of all things. 4:12 But the hateful cannot see the loving. 4:13 They are obsessed with the loving but don’t know why. 4:14 They don’t care why. 4:15 So the hateful call the loving hateful. 4:16 And the loving will always wonder why.
4:17 We are not what we have, know, believe, or do. 4:18 But only how we misuse them all. 4:19 The opposite of excellence is arrogance. 4:20 Of ownership, possessiveness. 4:21 Of value, blindness to value. 4:22 So be great and admire the small. 4:23 Be of value and look for value where it is not easy to see or to find. 4:24 Value appreciates the effort to find it. 4:25 For value is like a man who always sees himself. 4:26 Worship the ground by walking. 4:27 The air by breathing. 4:28 Earth by eating. 4:29 Love’s unfair for you. 4:30 Love is God.
4:31 But mockery is closer to worship than hatred. 4:32 Desire closer to hatred than satisfaction. 4:33 Ignorance closer to truth than opinion. 4:34 Indifference closer to opinion than worry. 4:35 To love all who deserve it, love all who don’t. 4:36 To hate no one wrongly, hate no one rightly. 4:37 But to hate everyone, hate anyone. 4:38 And to hate everything, hate anything. 4:39 Love is the act of listening. 4:40 For love is a man who listens. 4:41 So give shamelessly. 4:42 Give shamefully. 4:43 Give with no regard to shame. 4:44 Forgive shamelessly. 4:45 Forgive shamefully. 4:46 Preforgive without remorse. 4:47 Love listens. 4:48 So, to love, give an ear, and throw yourself away. 4:49 To love, lend a hand, and throw yourself away. 4:50 To love anything, you must throw yourself away. 4:51 So do not happily enter Heaven through the grave, but the landfill.
4:52 Service is wealth. 4:53 To be needed cannot be taken from you. 4:54 No one can take how needed you are. 4:55 No one.
4:56 And do not pity the sick who go to Heaven. 4:57 Pity the hateful who go to Hell. 4:58 And if we would betray anyone for any reason, we have already betrayed ourselves for no reason. 4:59 We are eager to give away what we know we are worthy to have returned. 4:60 So do not keep track of your sacrifices, they can keep track of themselves. 4:61 Grief is the mother of all happiness, but joy is the son of grief. 4:62 To love the son, love his mother, or you love neither of them. 4:63 For joy is a man with a mother, and his mother is grief.
5 How can a man profit from theft, meanness, or thoughtlessness? 5:2 To improve is the only profit. 5:3 One cannot improve through theft, meanness, or thoughtlessness, but only through loving justice. 5:4 I hold up the shards of this broken world to show you I am not in pain. 5:5 But the ungrateful heart is always in pain. 5:6 The only thing the heart should stand to do is fall in love. 5:7 It is the enamel of the heart. 5:8 It protects us from all pain. 5:9 But the world is held up by the love of one like a man who cares. 5:10 Why would you desire anything more than gentle kindness? 5:11 And yet we were fashioned to desire such a thing. 5:12 Such a thing could only be gently created with good intentions. 5:13 But he who seeks honey is always followed by swarms of bees. 5:14 But he who follows the bees of life, though he is stung, always has life and honey in him.5:15 Do not pray for honey. 5:16 But be as bees.
5:17 The love that formed the cosmos and the heavens is always there for you. 5:18 So why then do you always feel so betrayed? 5:19 Is not this love worth more than gold? 5:20 Why do you care how he acts? 5:21 Or how she looks? 5:22 How he speaks? 5:23 Or what she says? 5:24 A drop of this love is worth more than many mean words. 5:25 More than a pound of heaven is the value of a drop of love. 5:26 So do not then have a goldmine and then complain about an anthill. 5:27 But have yourself a heart of gold worth more than all the gold in every mountain in the world. 5:28 And do not drown in the ocean of your own mind. 5:29 Because the love in your heart can walk across the chaos of the sea.
5:30 Divinity attracts. 5:31 Because divinity is like a man who celebrates himself. 5:32 So when your wife criticizes you, thank her for going through the trouble. 5:33 And if she takes your friend to dinner, pay him to have her a second time. 5:34 She will run back to you herself. 5:35 So, to love her, throw yourself away, and give them all your things.
5:36 He that loves one because he hates the other hates both. 5:37 He that hates one because he loves the other hates both. 5:38 You either love them both, or you love neither of them. 5:39 You either love them all, or you love none of them. 5:40 Love cannot be kindly divided to be given as a snack to your friends. 5:41 Love is the only friend.
5:42 Marvel always. 5:43 The loving nature of our being proves we are beyond what we are told we are. 5:44 For we were fashioned to both desire gentle kindness and to wonder why. 5:45 Contemplate always. 5:46 Divinity is yours. 5:47 Do not be ashamed of doing what is good for the sake of the dust that hates you. 5:48 For all dust returns to itself. 5:49 But so does divinity. 5:50 Marvel always therefore at what compels you to move. 5:51 And move.
5:52 Do not be forgetful about what you once desired to have when it comes. 5:53 The first obstacle to have her was her. 5:54 The last obstacle to have her is you. 5:55 The first obstacle to pray is needing to. 5:56 The last obstacle to pray is not needing to. 5:57 The first obstacle to obtain it is to need it. 5:58 The last obstacle to obtain it is to not need it. 5:59 And do not grow angry too often. 5:60 Unless you know everything. 5:61 But if you know so much, learn not to be angry. 5:62 Be more knowledgeable than you are angry. 5:63 Better still, know not to be angry.
6 I am the ground; the grass blowing in the field. 6:2 Come and step on me. 6:3 But once I grab your heel, I never let go. 6:4 For every thought you had has always existed. 6:5 Before the foundation of the world, you laughed. 6:6 Everyone in your way was always the way. 6:7 Every feeling you had was always shared with many you never knew. 6:8 But when you thought of them, many thought of you.
6:9 Everything follows you in the direction you take it. 6:10 The whole history of the cosmos is following you wherever you choose to take it, like the mosquito follows the blood of your veins. 6:11 Joy takes refuge in the loving heart. 6:12 Hatred distrusts joy and shuns it. 6:13 Every recitation inspires what it recites. 6:14 Inspiration flows in both directions. 6:15 Every act inspires its own act. 6:16 Action forms in both directions. 6:17 Every soul influences the formation of its prayers. 6:18 Every prayer influences the formation of its soul. 6:19 The soul is formed in both directions.
6:20 Everything carries eternity. 6:21 Everything carries the whole history of the cosmos. 6:22 He who hates any moment hates every moment. 6:23 He who hates any man hates every man. 6:24 He who hates the ugly hates the beautiful. 6:25 He who hates his enemy hates his friend. 6:26 But today is the prisoner of the past and the prince of tomorrow. 6:27 And every presence interferes with the substance of its meaning. 6:28 And every meaning interferes with the appreciation of its substance. 6:29 The image often reminds us of each other even more than ourselves.
6:30 Every love endures the suffering it never desires. 6:31 Every desire calls for the suffering it never endures. 6:32 Everywhere you place what is evil you make as if worthy of evil. 6:33Everywhere you place what is good you make as if worthy of good. 6:34 Be good, and evil turns away. 6:35 Be evil, and you will only see evil.
6:36 Every time you are considerate, you must let go of being polite. 6:37 Every time you are polite, you must let go of being considerate. 6:38 Follow any thought to its conclusion. 6:39 The polite always leave. 6:40 For politeness is a pleasure. 6:41 Follow any thought to its conclusion. 6:42 The considerate always remain. 6:43 To the polite, speak politely. 6:44 To the considerate, speak of matters of the heart.
6:45 There are only echoes in the closed and empty heart. 6:46 But what you are, you seek. 6:47And as you seek it, it will be shown to you. 6:48 What you are, you hear. 6:49 And as you are, it will be said to you. 6:50 Be random, so God can use you just in case. 6:51 It doesn’t concern you how. 6:52 But be kind, so God can be kind. 6:53 Random acts of kindness are worth more than many hours of prayer. 6:54 But pray.
7 Be glad when you don’t have your way. 7:2 Otherwise you desire the way of another and are a thief.
7:3 Be glad about lots of waste. 7:4 Otherwise your neighbor becomes unsatisfied and steals.
7:5 Be glad when you find the good in your enemy. 7:6 For the sake of your friends. 7:7 Pray not for the needy but to be needed. 7:8 Consider not only what is clean and kosher, it is not kosher or clean. 7:9 Honor your exes as your second parents. 7:10 If you gave them your heart, let them have it. 7:11 If they warmed your heart, let them burn it. 7:12 Do not burden another with what you yourself cannot bear. 7:13 Love their ingratitude. 7:14 For that is gratitude. 7:15 Love their unkindness. 7:16 For that is kindness. 7:17 Surrender to the impossible. 7:18 It is the only thing that is possible. 7:19 And love Him who is your God above all things. 7:20 For that is heaven.
8 Mastery will find the hands of the novice; necessity, the hands of the master. 8:2 One problem always solves the other. 8:3 This knowledge is greater than all magic. 8:4 To worry, then, is carelessness pretending to care. 8:5 Anxiety, thoughtlessness. 8:6 Passion, indifference. Reverence, hatred. 8:7 Desire, disgust. 8:8 Success in helping is to stop helping. 8:9 Teach the hungry. 8:10 Do not feed them. 8:11 Give him his bakery, not bread from yours.
8:12 A man thinks with his hands, handles with his mind. 8:13 The thoughtless consider themselves thoughtful. 8:14 The thoughtful know they are as if thoughtless. 8:15 The cruel consider themselves considerate. 8:16 The good are good insofar as they let God be.
8:17 Thieves own less than nothing, for they owe. 8:18 Tyrants dictate less than nothing, for they are drunk. 8:19 But to hate is worse than to die. 8:20 To win, give up. 8:21 To have, let go. 8:22 To agree, disagree. 8:23 To worry about nothing, worry about everything. 8:24 To lose everything, be stingy with anything.
8:25 Be glad when they complain. 8:26 A weak complaint proves you. 8:27 A strong complaint improves you. 8:28 The more admirable you become, the less you will be admired. 8:29 The more admirable your love, the less anyone can see it. 8:30 The more admirable your work, the less anyone will praise it. 8:31 The more you do, the more will be asked of you. 8:32 But whatever is asked of you gives you the power to do it. 8:33 This knowledge is greater than all magic.
8:34 A small evil is easier to praise than greatness. 8:35 To be unworthy feels like being above. 8:36 Heavy is the broom in the unworthy hand. 8:37 But mine is my staff that comforts me. 8:38 Transfigures me.
8:39 Saves me.
9 A problem in marriage is only the hot water for the tea of your souls. 9:2 Let it bring out the good inside you all along.
9:3 Pray for them to be unfair. 9:4 The more unfair they are, the better you will understand fairness. 9:5 What a wonderful thing to do, to contemplate the nature of fairness. 9:6 It is worth any unfairness.
9:7 A wife is a book. 9:8 An open book. 9:9 She hates having to teach. 9:10 But the man who doesn’t put down this book to listen to his wife is a man who hates having to learn.
9:11 Whatever they don’t enjoy of yours, sell. 9:12 What they hate, give away. 9:13 Whatever they don’t enjoy of you, enjoy of them. 9:14 Whatever they disrespect of you, respect of them. 9:15 For every excuse you give them, allow them seven.
9:16 The more pathetic the excuse for them, the more you love them. 9:17 And the more your own love harms. 9:18 The unfaithful believe they love the beautiful. 9:19 But the unfaithful desire beauty at the expense of the beautiful. 9:20 Only God loves. 9:21 We let Him. 9:22 If you love them, throw your love away. 9:23 Do not desire to love at the expense of those you love, being amazed by the rotten milk of your breast. 9:24 Self-justifiers love insofar as they are self-mesmerized. 9:25 Praise keeps you there. 9:26 Turn away from praise and worthless things. 9:27 Love without praise is the only kind with birth pains. 9:28 Because it is the only kind which gives you birth.
9:29 When your eyes see misdeeds, see divinity moving there. 9:30 Divinity is in the pits of the fruits of our sins. 9:31 When your eyes see a fight for fairness, see unfairness moving there. 9:32 Unfairness is in every step in the pursuit of fairness. 9:33 You escape nothing. 9:34 There is no escape. 9:35 You are closer to justice than the air you breathe. 9:36 You cannot escape your blessings. 9:37 Nor your punishments. 9:38 Do not scheme or complain. 9:39 The only poverty is to be unworthy of accepting this.
9:40 Divorce proves divinity. 9:41 For the soulless body would have become accustomed to how we are. 9:42 How you desire to be treated, treat each other better. 9:43 And even more, love them anyway, so you can be loved anyway. 9:44 She’s the most beautiful. 9:45 But I love her anyway.
