Today, we announced an update from our kidney xenotransplant program:
• 5 patients transplanted with EGEN-2784
• 3 remained dialysis-independent for more than 8 months
• 1 has now surpassed 9 months
• 2 successfully transitioned to human kidney transplants

🧬 What if a #PigKidney could keep patients off dialysis while they wait for a human organ?
A genetically modified pig kidney supported a 66-year-old patient for 271 days before he received a human kidney—the longest reported dialysis-free survival after a porcine #kidney transplant.
✍️ @vanitasrivasta1 explores what this could mean for xenotransplantation.

Experimental cases of giving gene-edited pig organs to people have shown promise.
In a world first, Tim Andrews, 66, from New Hampshire in the US, was given a pig kidney that enabled him to stay off dialysis for nine months. ⤵️

Our latest study, just published in @TheLancet, reports the first successful transition from porcine kidney #xenotransplantation to human kidney transplantation.
A genetically engineered pig kidney provided >9 months (271 days) of dialysis-free kidney function before successful human transplantation, supporting xenotransplantation as a potential bridge while preserving future transplant options.
Beyond the clinical milestone, the study provides new insights into late microvascular inflammation and innate immune activation that will help shape future immunosuppressive strategies and donor genetic engineering.
