Beyond questions about AI use, the independent verification of scientific results remains essential.
As the retraction notice reports “key results in the paper cannot be independently verified and that the reliability of the underlying analyses cannot be confirmed.”
Aidan Toner-Rodgers (infamous for being kicked out of the MIT economics PhD program for a fraudulent AI paper (which was R&R QJE & then pulled)) now has another paper retracted, this time from the Journal of Development Economics. Retraction notice here: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Valuable update to the Global Macro Database (GMD), which integrates macro data from various sources into a consistent cross-country dataset; 46 variables for 200+ countries. New plugin for Claude Code and Codex enables AI agents to search for time series and plot the data.

Situazione in 🇫🇷 é preoccupante.

Reposting a graph, which is unfortunately very relevant for France today. Namely, when it appears that debt may be becoming unsustainable, the interest rate increases first slowly, then suddenly.
(The underlying paper comes out this week, and, when it does, I shall tweet more about the actual implications)
Useful to summarize the discussion about debt and spreads in a graph (based on work with @pmbruera and @Gonhuertas. Working paper out soon).
The blue line shows the “good equilibrium” if investors are rationally optimistic. At very low debt, no risk of default, no spread, then a slow increase, and eventually a sudden jump and default. So, if things get worse (high continuing deficits, increasing debt ratio), reasons to worry.
But, even if things do not get worse, and investors turn (rationally) pessimistic, they require a larger spread, the interest rate jumps and default happens faster.
I think France is roughly at point A: small spread, but reasons to worry. Deficit is too large, so France keeps moving to the right. And, even if not, equilibrium could jump to point B, with a higher spread.

Governments in advanced economies are increasingly running out of fiscal space. That's why central banks are going to have to become better at articulating the trade-offs that are involved in using their balance sheet to absorb the issuance of government bonds. If they don't, there will be more and more political pressure to bear on the central banks to use their balance sheet. The recent calls for cancellation of the French government debt held by the ECB are a great example.
