Newly updated with data for 2023: Interactive, customizable map of US power plants.
Details here: bsky.app/profile/dvschroeder…
Replying to @mattyglesias
As a nonexpert I'm inclined to assess claims like this by looking at what other countries have done: 🇨🇦🇫🇷🇪🇸🇩🇪🇬🇧🇸🇪🇷🇺🇺🇦🇯🇵🇰🇷🇨🇳🇮🇳
Obviously 🇺🇸 can learn and improve. But I don't think any country has yet demonstrated that the potential cost reductions are especially large.
Finally updated the interactive map of US power plants.

Review of my book!
"...broader in scope, and much more fun to read, than its title suggests. It's an expert-guided whirlwind tour of the solar industry as of the year 2023."

Tearing down dams could save Western rivers — and also make it harder to solve the climate crisis.
I spent a week in Idaho, exploring hydropower dams that have allowed the biggest power company in a deep-red state to pledge 100% clean energy. My story: latimes.com/environment/stor…
Read this terrific article by @PhilipKennicott on the history and culture of air conditioning (and don't judge it by its headline, which doesn't do it justice at all).

A cheap-shot framing that misleads. Being dependent on a country for a durable material product isn't nearly as dangerous as being dependent for a fuel supply whose cutoff creates an instant crisis.

Promises to use sustainable aviation fuel to eliminate aviation's carbon footprint are mostly greenwashing. The sooner we recognize that, the sooner we can start tackling the hard questions about how to decarbonize our airlines:

This is exciting. Season 2 of Power Trip: The Story of Energy is on @PBS, and the second episode is about disasters. I weigh in on grid-related ones. It airs tonight on TV, I think, and it's available to stream! pbs.org/video/power-grid-dis…

Holtec announced it intended to restart the 800 MW Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan after striking a PPA with Wolverine Power Cooperative. If successful , it would be the first decommissioned nuclear plant to be fired back up in the United States:

Always happy to see promising new tech actually being deployed.
I do have a question: Now that "long-duration" apparently means 10 to 12 hours, what do we call the storage we need to get through cloudy weather and seasonal cycles? Super-long duration?

Is 90-10 the best way to think about it?
Or 80-20, or 70-30?
I suspect the better model is a continuum, where challenges grow while technologies improve all along the way.
And we need to have lots of people focused on each and every time scale.

U.S. small-scale #solar capacity grew from 7.3 GW in 2014 to 39.5 GW in 2022.
Small-scale solar—the majority of which is made up of residential rooftop solar panels—makes up about one-third of the total U.S. solar capacity.

Beginning next month, the wind+solar share of US total energy use will drop from 5% to 2%.
Beginning with next month’s Monthly Energy Review, we’re updating how we calculate primary energy consumption of #electricity generation from noncombustible #renewable energy sources.
What does that mean? We have more details here: eia.gov/totalenergy/data/mon…
