By far my favourite Scotland vs Brazil story is the referee saying “Good luck, may the best team win” to both captains before the game in 1982 and Graeme Souness replying “I fucking hope not”

(Chinese planners, thinking in centuries): Alright, let’s do a “humiliation” one here…

Famously Chinese television has no aristocratic historical shows.

Oh @terriblemaps how I love you for adding to my #badgeographyjoke collection.
The best tribute I've read to Stoppard. theguardian.com/stage/2025/d…
...although this critique by @ArmandDAngour is entirely reasonable too - if you're going to flatter your audience with Latin or Greek, get an expert to check you're doing it right, so you're not just presenting Potemkin intellectualism engelsbergideas.com/notebook…

As someone who has thought for two years that Israel would kill as many people in Gaza as would be necessary to destroy its society and force the survivors to leave - I am not going to be against a plan that, coming out of Arab pressure, is the first serious attempt to stop it

You wanted a nice day out flying kites with your family. But @NaturalEngland won't let you.
Natural England won't let us build, won't let us have fun. It won't let us do anything.
The Government empowers them to block everything. This has to end.
This is a strong and not-completely-obvious theory that merits a chapter in the book that @thomasforth is clearly warming up to write on North-South disparity and what North England needs (devolution and infra etc).
More good maps from the @suttontrust sum up the regional variation in the excellent results of kids in England at GCSEs. It's the pattern we expect, very much a "the same as all maps of England" type stuff. Why? How much does it matter? To the kids? To England? To our economy?

This is one of the most spellbinding anecdotes I've ever read, and it’s just Ray Bradbury rambling about a carnival worker he met when he was twelve.
“He said, ‘You were my best friend outside of Paris in 1918. You were wounded in the Ardennes and you died in my arms there.’”
Why is this dumb? If you are a country that exports goods to the US and doesn't buy goods from the US (like US allies in Asia) you get your economy destroyed - even if you buy balancing services from the US, because this only looks at goods.
1. Download US Goods Trade data from census.gov/foreign-trade/bal…
2.Take the 2024 Goods Imports and Exports to US for each country - that's all you need, no requirement for knowledge of Tariffs or Currency Manipulation AT ALL.
