Pearl Jam released Vs. in America 33 years ago today, on October 19, 1993. It was their first album with producer Brendan O'Brien and drummer Dave Abbruzzese, and right up to the last minute it was going to be called Five Against One, after a line in "Animal." Some early cassettes still have that title printed on them. Jeff Ament took the cover photo, an angora goat behind a fence on a farm in Victor, Montana. The band refused to make a single music video, and it still sold 950,378 copies in its first five days, the biggest first week since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991. It spent five weeks at No. 1.
